3 safety tips Your child Will Learn In A Chesapeake School

Picture
Sr. Master Tracy Lee Thomas of Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts offers three safety tips that your child will learn in his Chesapeake karate school. Through "Karate For Kids Life Skills System", a special program at CLMA, kids learn how to be safe.

Chesapeake karate

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts is an award winning Chesapeake karate and martial arts school located in the Virginia Beach area. We have been providing Chesapeake karate and martial arts classes for adults and children for 20 years.

Parents bring their kids to our Chesapeake karate programs for different reasons. Some have children who are overweight and bring them to us to help them slim down. Others want their kids to do better in school and behave around the house. They find that our Chesapeake karate program teaches them the skills to do this. However, many parents bring their kids to our Chesapeake Karate for kids program because they want them to become more safety conscious and learn to extricate themselves from potentially threatening situations.

Chesapeake Karate for Kids

All the programs we offer for kids at our Chesapeake karate school are designed to give kids the tools they need to defend themselves should the need arise. In fact, many of the safety tips and techniques we instill in our Chesapeake karate program are intended to stave off danger before it ever fully materializes.

Never Get Into a Stranger's Car

Young people are open-minded and impressionable. Unfortunately, this also means they can be naive and unsuspecting. One of the safety principles we instill in our Chesapeake karate program is never to get into a stranger's car. We teach our Chesapeake karate kids to politely but firmly refuse. If the stranger is more persistent, we teach them to run away and find a parent or a neighbor. Should push come to shove, the training we provide for kids in our Chesapeake karate program is specially designed to help them overpower an assailant for long enough to break free and flee.

Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings

This is another of the main safety tenets we instill in our Chesapeake Karate for kids program. Often, avoiding a dangerous situation is as simple as crossing to the other side of a street or staying out of dimly lit areas when walking. We teach all our Chesapeake karate students to travel on well-lit, populated paths when walking home from school or a friend's house at night.

Strike Quickly and Run

Even the most well-trained of students at our Chesapeake Karate for kids program would have a hard time going toe to toe with an adult opponent. This is why we teach techniques that are designed to stun assailants long enough to break free and escape to safety. At our facility in Chesapeake, karate techniques like elbow strikes to the face, punches to the groin and jabs to the eye are encouraged because when delivered forcefully, they are capable of disabling an opponent long enough to make good an escape.

If you are interested in finding out how training in our Chesapeake Karate for kids program can help your children to better protect themselves, please contact our headquarters at 757-471-9002 or visit our website at www.atakick.com

Engaging In Martial Arts To Combat Childhood Obesity

This article details the problems of childhood obesity and presents martial arts as a good possible solution. It also presents CLMA as one of the best options available to concerned parents.

The Problem of Childhood Obesity

With childhood obesity having become a national epidemic in the last decade, more and more parents are discovering that martial arts can be an effective solution for helping their children to get their weight under control. Studying this form offers both children and adults a fitness program that is complete and beneficial to the development and improvement of the whole body.

Martial Arts and Childhood Obesity

I have been teaching martial arts to children and adults in the Virginia Beach area for over 30 years now. In that time, I have watched this particular childhood problem grow. Over the years, parents have brought their kids into train in our dojo for a variety of reasons. In recent years, I have seen an alarming number of childhood obesity cases.

Childhood obesity can be a complex, multi-tiered problem. Martial arts, contrary to what many people believe, is not merely a method of learning a forceful form of attack. In fact, it is a way of life for many of us. The physical practice of martial arts incorporates many different aspects of fitness including strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and becoming more agile, coordinated and in control of your body. Together, these different aspects of studying martial arts can combine to be a very powerful tool in combating childhood obesity.

Changing Lives Martial Arts

At Changing Lives Martial Arts, we make a commitment to each and every one of our students to help them reach the top of their potential, not just in the dojo but also in life. In both our Karate for Kids program, which is designed for kids between the ages of 6 and 12, and in our teen and adult martial arts program, we work with individual students to help them get out of martial arts the things that will most benefit them in their lives.

When it comes to combating childhood obesity, we encourage behavior within the walls of the martial arts studio that is intended to be carried over into every aspect of their lives. We instill our instruction in martial arts technique with a strong sense of virtues like self-control, self-discipline and self-respect. We foster an environment that encourages constructive behavior and moderation of consumption.

Childhood Obesity and the Community

Childhood obesity is a very serious problem. As a seventh degree black belt, I believe childhood obesity is a problem that is the responsibility of the whole community. As parents, adults and teachers, we must set an example and provide an atmosphere that encourages the healthy development of our children within the community. It is my personal belief that martial arts is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal available to deal with this problem.

Prevent Childhood Obesity

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts TOP 10 Ways to Prevent Childhood Obesity plus 5 Ways to get your children into shape from Dr. Oz, as seen on Oprah! Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake is concerned about the dire reports we have seen about childhood obesity becoming rampant in America. This is not an experience we wish on any child, it is a scary thing. Preventing obesity can be easy and empowering for children. Parents and care givers need to allow them to have control over their bodies. Teach them to take control of their real needs and treat their bodies with love and respect; much like the traditional life skills we teach at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts.

Recently on Oprah, Dr. Oz said that the goal with children is to allow the growth to be the weight loss. So when the child gets taller, they don’t gain more weight. In these cases the children lost weight because they had excessive.

Dr. Oz told the Oprah audience the top 5 ways to help get your children into shape. They are as follows:

  • Never withhold food that is in the house. If you don’t want the kids to eat it then don’t buy it and bring it home. By singling the child out they can develop unhealthy desires for the foods that they cannot have making them want it all the more.
  • Never eat dinner in front of the television.
  • Have your kids eat 7 – 10 grams of fiber every day for breakfast.
  • Healthy foods such as vegetables have to be tried at least 10 times before it will be accepted by children.
  • Get moving as a family. You can become active by getting a pet that you can take on a daily walk. Dr. Oz has the Dance Dance Revolution game at his house to keep everyone at an active weight or try enrolling in martial arts classes. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake is offering family discounts and enrolling new members now. We have four Hampton Roads locations to serve you. http://atakick.com
In addition to what Dr. Oz is suggesting above, Senior Master T. L. Thomas, Master Instructor at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake suggests the following 10 Tips to Help Prevent Childhood Obesity:

  • Allow children to be in charge of the food they eat. Children thrive on self control.
  • Make all foods equal and teach children to check in with their bodies and choose foods based on what their bodies are asking for. Encourage your child to respect their bodies.
  • Encourage children to know when they are full and to stop eating at that point. Focusing is a key life skill we teach at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts.
  • Let them eat according to their own hunger patterns, rather than according to external schedules. Senior Master Thomas suggests eating a healthy snack before coming to your taekwondo class or exercising, this can help a child become disciplined with their training/exercise program.
  • De-emphasize body shape and weight. Encourage children to love and accept their bodies unconditionally. Self-esteem is a key life skill taught at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts.
  • Help them find ways to move and play so they get enjoyable exercise every day. We have many families enrolled at our academies, Families that Kick Together, Stick Together.
  • Love them unconditionally, and don’t make derogatory comments about their looks or weight. Children need way to build their confidence, martial arts is an individual sport that allows children to progress at their own pace.
  • Be sure they never get started on the damaging cycle of dieting and bingeing. As always, encourage them to live a healthy, active lifestyle. It is important for children to be courteous to their bodies.
  • Let food fuel the body. Don’t turn it into a reward or save certain things to be a special treat. On a further note, don’t use “grounding” a child from a sports/healthy activity as a form of punishment. Our instructors at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts encourage parents to communicate on progress at home and in school and help the children to use their ATA Life Skills to do the right thing. We encourage the children by rewarding them in class for positive behavior
  • Teach children to honor and respect others and not to make fun of someone that is overweight. Ask your instructor for permission to bring your family members, friends, classmates, and neighbors for a FREE 3 Day Confidence Course or call today to schedule your first class.

ATA Martial Arts Fights Obesity

Picture
Childhood obesity is rampant in most developed countries. A current controversy facing physical education (P.E.) classes in schools everywhere is whether or not to do body composition testing on students. Body composition testing uses a series of skin-fold measurements to determine a person’s body fat percentage. Generally, calipers are used to take the skin-fold measurements; there are other methods of body composition testing available, but the caliper method is the one often used by schools and can be fairly accurate when administered by trained personnel. In a school setting, a member of the same sex should always administer the test.

Obesity is a problem in America... Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts Fights Obesity. Martial Arts Master Instructor, Tracy Lee Thomas fights obesity.

Childhood Obesity is Serious ! ATA Martial Arts Helps obesity decline in Virginia Beach …

There are good arguments both for and against testing students’ body composition. Many schools lack the privacy controls needed to keep test results confidential. Some students are never taught how to read the results; those who do understand the results sometimes use them to embarrass other students. One of the pros of doing composition testing is that it would put many teens, especially girls, in the “normal” range. Borderline teens would be made aware of a potentially dangerous health issue, and it may encourage some to pursue a more active lifestyle. The cons are it may hurt the self-esteem of those with a positive self-image. False results are possible. A recent study has shown that tired or untrained personnel may alter results by 20%. Students may compare scores; those comparisons may prompt eating disorders.

Many adults have nightmarish stories about their days in P.E. A new generation of teachers is working to erase that outdated image, but one thing that never changes is that something said in the wrong way may have a lifelong affect on someone. To prevent this from happening, all test results should be kept confidential, and students should be taught to track their own progress instead of comparing themselves to their classmates.

The epidemic rates of obesity didn’t happen overnight, and its demise will take time, too. In order for testing to have a positive effect on a community, the community needs to answer some serious questions first:

  • Are there safe areas for students to have fun that also promote physical activity?
  • Does the community have parks or youth centers for the kids to meet?
  • Do the kids hang out at the fast food places because they feel welcome and safe?
  • Are the bowling alleys and skate rinks safe, accessible and adequate in size for the students?
  • Is it cost prohibitive for many students to participate on local teams?
  • Body composition testing is just one issue. We must reexamine all aspects of our communities in order to achieve a significant decline in obesity rates.
A student’s Martial Arts journey at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts is a ‘Personal Victory’ that is both positive and self rewarding and is taught in a structured manner for personal self improvement,” says Master Instructor, Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas.

Master Thomas says, “It’s about being proactive and educating our youth on the importance of healthy eating habits and a scheduled physical routine. This is why so many of our students see the difference in our Martial Arts programs in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Martial Arts for kids is more than just kicking and punching; it’s a way of life that will help change our lives for longevity.”

Studying Doesn’t Help Every Test … Childhood obesity is rampant in most developed countries. A current controversy facing school physical education (P.E.) classes everywhere is whether or not to do body composition testing on students. There are good arguments, both for and against, that need to be evaluated if the testing is done. Among those are privacy controls that must be firmly in place, students should be educated on how to use this information beforehand and the results should never be used to embarrass a student. Body composition testing is used to determine the percent of body fat by taking three to seven skin-fold measurements using calipers. There are other methods available, but this one is usually used by schools and can be fairly accurate when administered by trained personnel. In the school setting, a member of the same sex should administer the test. The pros for doing composition testing are that it could put many teens, especially girls in the “normal” range. However, one thing that never changes is that something said in the wrong way may have a lifelong affect on someone. To prevent this from happening, the results should be kept confidential, and students should be addressed to compare their numbers against their own, not others. Teasing is a form of bullying and students should be reminded about the policies in place at their school. The epidemic rates of obesity didn’t happen overnight and its demise will take time too. Eat Healthy

Picture
ATA Martial Arts Top 10 Healthy Eating Tips for Children with Tips from Martial Arts Mom’s in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake is concerned about the reports about childhood obesity becoming rampant in America. This is not an experience we wish on any child. Obesity is a scary thing. Preventing obesity can be easy and empowering for children. Parents and care givers need to allow children to have control over their bodies. Kids need to learn to take control of their real needs and treat their bodies with love and respect, the sort of traditional life skills we teach at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts.

Nutrition is at least as important as exercise. People who attempt to lose weight are often totally confused about the role of nutrition. Some think that if they work out, they can eat whatever they want. Not true! Worse, contestants on The Biggest Loser often come in thinking “they'll work out a lot and won't eat at all,” says Bob Harper, a trainer on the popular TV show. This is not a good strategy! You need to hit the sweet spot: fueling your body enough with healthy foods to give you energy to get through the day (and your exercise routine), but not so much that you take in more than you're burning off.

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts has provided these practical healthy eating tips for your children and yourself. Our Martial Arts Moms have added tips that work for them and their children. For more information about our programs, please visit us at http://atakick.com .

Practical Healthy Eating Tips for Children
  1. Encourage your child to eat regular meals and snacks: Offer three meals and one to three snacks each day, and serve your child a wide variety of healthy foods. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Think ahead and pack several healthy snacks for “on the go” so that children have easy access to healthy options.
  2. Serve plenty of fruits and vegetables: Fruits and veggies are packed with nutrients, yet contain few calories. Be sure to include at least one fruit and/or vegetable at each meal and snack. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Remember, a food needs to be introduced up to 10 times before a child’s taste buds can enjoy it. Children love to help in the kitchen—allow them to help make smoothies or rinse/prepare vegetables.
  3. Focus on high-fiber whole grains: Whole grain, fiber-rich breads, cereals, pastas, rice and low-fat crackers provide more vitamins, minerals and fiber to help meet your child’s nutritional needs. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Remember that parents lead by example. Most of the time, children eat what we do.
  4. Choose low-fat and non-fat dairy products: Low-fat and non-fat milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream and ice cream contain less fat and cholesterol than regular-fat versions. If your child eats cheese regularly, consider purchasing reduced-fat varieties. (Keep in mind that children between one and two years of age need to consume whole milk.) Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Can’t get your child to drink milk? Try blending ½ cup frozen fruit into 1 cup low-fat milk. Don’t forget to serve with a straw.
  5. Limit sweetened beverages: Juice, soda, lemonade, and fruit drinks contain excess sugar and calories, but few nutrients—sometimes, none at all. Serve these drinks only on occasion, and serve no more than four to eight ounces—you can dilute these with water. Plain water is the best choice. Consider going green by purchasing reusable water bottles; let your child pick one in their favorite color. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Add fruit to your ice cube trays, blueberries work great!
  6. Avoid sugar-laden breakfast cereals, breakfast bars, and granola bars: Many cereals, breakfast bars, and granola bars that appeal to kids are high in sugar and have ingredients almost like a candy bar. Choose unsweetened, low-fat, whole grain, fiber-rich versions of these items instead. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Add fruit to naturally sweeten cereals. Also this is a great meal for children to “prepare” themselves; they get pretty excited when they help. Don’t forget, children can only eat what you bring into the house. If you avoid buying sugary foods, your children won’t be able to eat them.
  7. Reduce sugar intake: Kids love sweet treats like candy, cookies, donuts, muffins and chewy "fruit" snacks, but too much sugar is not good for their health or teeth. Offer these items infrequently – perhaps as dessert after dinner - and limit the serving size. Choose healthier alternatives such as fresh, dried, freeze-dried or canned (in juice or extra-light syrup) fruit. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Our family opts to go to our martial arts class for our after dinner treat. We also have a “special of the week”--each week our children get to pick a new fruit or vegetable to try. This encourages the children to try new things and offers a healthy alternative to help change things up after dinner.
  8. Use pre-packaged convenience foods sparingly: Although quick and easy, these highly processed foods are high in salt, sugar, and/or fat—as well as preservatives—and have little nutritional value. Serve these items only in "emergency" situations. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: We wash all fruits and veggies right after we get home from the grocery store. This helps save prep time when preparing meals. Also, “think double: Double your recipes and freeze half for future meals. Just remember to label everything prior to putting it in the freezer and leave at least ½ inch of space at the top of the container as frozen foods expand.
  9. Avoid fast food: There are few nutrients in fast food—and plenty of calories, sugar, fat, cholesterol, salt and preservatives. When you do eat out, make healthy restaurant choices and help your child order the most nutritious items off of the menu. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: As moms, we know this isn’t always avoidable. So when you do have to make this choice, consider the healthy alternatives that fast food restaurants are now offering. Simply replacing the French fries with fruit or veggie dippers and the soda with low-fat milk will make a world of difference.
  10. Prevent habitual overeating: Infants and young children are very good at paying attention to their hunger and fullness cues. Reinforce that your kids should eat only when they are hungry and stop as soon as they start to feel full. Avoid the "clean-your-plate" mentality. If your child is satisfied, don't force him to finish his meal. Martial Arts Mom’s Tip: Invest in a home food scale and an extra set of measuring cups/spoons. This is a great way to incorporate portion control and measuring for children. Obviously, you can’t measure and weigh every time; however, children love to utilize what they learn in school at home.

Did you Know?

Noah Ringer, the star of The Last Airbender is an ATA Martial Arts Student.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKLpS1xzbjg

The martial arts movie The Last Airbender hits Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Virginia.  First it was the Karate Kid movie where nearly 500 Changing Lives Martial Arts students traveled to the Regal Cinemas to watch the Karate Kid movie.  Now, Avatar The Last Airbender is here!  We are so proud of our ATA Martial Arts Student who is the main character.  From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia lists information on Noah Ringer and ATA martial arts student.  Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Suffolk have local ATA Martial Arts facilities. The Last Airbender is an American adventure fantasy film released on July 1, 2010.[1] It is a live-action film adaptation based on the first season of the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The film stars Noah Ringer (an ATA Martial Arts Student) as Aang, a reluctant hero who prefers adventure over his job as the Avatar. Aang and his friends, Katara and Sokka, journey to the North Pole to find a Waterbending master to teach Aang and Katara the secrets of the craft. At the same time, Fire Lord Ozai, the current Fire Lord of the Fire Nation, is waging a seemingly endless war against the Earth Kingdom, the Water Tribes, and the already vanquished Air Nomads. The film also stars Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, and Dev Patel.

The first of a planned trilogy, The Last Airbender was produced by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies.[4] Development for a film began in 2007; it was adapted into a film by M. Night Shyamalan, who also directed and produced. Other producers include Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy, Sam Mercer and Scott Aversano.[5] The series from which it was adapted was influenced by Asian art, mythology and various martial arts fighting styles and was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The Last Airbender was made for $150 million and marketed with a budget of $130 million, making total costs at least $280 million.[3] Other estimates put the cost between $100 million and $110 million, while various news sources reported the whole Last Airbender trilogy would be made for around $250 million.[6][7] Filming began in mid-March 2009; the movie was released in both traditional two-dimensional projectors, as well as in 3D.

Tiny Tiger Martial Arts for Preschool Children

Picture
Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Promotes Tiny Tiger Martial Arts for Preschool Children, ages 3-6. It is well known throughout the Hampton Roads area how beneficial training in martial arts can be for both children and adults; however, studies show that the earlier your child starts martial arts, the more it can help him or her throughout their developmental stages. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake encourage your child to grow in body, mind and spirit.

"Our Tiny Tiger ATA Martial Arts program benefits children in many self ways, like self control, self defense, and self discipline. It gives your child a chance to strengthen his or her body and mind", states Senior Master T.L. Thomas, 7th Degree Master Instructor, he owns multiple ATA Martial Arts academies in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. http://atakick.com

So how does martial arts help your preschool child? ATA Martial Arts Tiny Tiger Program for Preschool Children Enhances Self-Esteem To start and we would think most important, martial arts builds self esteem. When you build a child's self–esteem, their sense of self worth grows. When they can see themselves for the unique and valuable individual that they are, then they can appreciate others for themselves. You must respect yourself before you can respect others. ATA Martial Arts Tiny Tigers Program offers children a strong foundation in essential character qualities such as courtesy, respect, and discipline. In addition, the Tiny Tiger program is designed to improve preschool children's motor skills and enhance their ability to pay attention and follow directions. As Oprah once stated on the Oprah Show, "It is confidence in our bodies, minds and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures, new directions to grow in, and new lessons to learn - which is what life is all about." The well-rounded teachings at your local ATA Martial Arts can positively impact children by enhancing their life-skills and placing emphasis on their values and attitudes.

ATA Martial Arts Tiny Tiger Program for Preschool Children Improves Focus and Self-Discipline The mental focus that is required to execute martial arts moves can spill over into a child’s everyday life and eventually improve his or her study habits, school performance, listening abilities, and also his or her ability to follow directions. Children who are focused have an easier time setting and achieving goals because they’re not intimidated by the hard work, and dedication required to live their dreams. The practice of martial arts can also improve the concentration of kids who suffer from attention disorders. Young children are impulsive by nature, so they often make decisions based solely on their emotions. Over time, the disciplined teachings at ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake will enable children to make clear and appropriate choices throughout life.

ATA Martial Arts Tiny Tiger Program for Preschool Children Teaches Safe Defense Parents never want to think about it, but there may come a time when a child is forced to defend himself against someone trying to do him harm. While it is unrealistic to expect a child to go toe-to-toe with an adult three times his size, a child who knows simple martial arts and break away techniques has a better chance of catching an attacker off guard and escaping to safety. ATA Martial Arts Tiny Tiger for Preschool Children focus on Stranger Danger and Safe Defense. Please visit http://atakick.com/index.php/our-programs/tiny-tigers.html and watch the Sgt. Safety videos with your child.

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake would like to encourage parents to allow their child (children) to participate in our Free 3 Day Confidence & Safety Course. We have four locations to help to assist your child in achieving their goals for better grades. For more information, please visit us at www.atakick.com.

Tiny Tigers Ages 3-6 Years Old

Picture
Tiny Tigers Taekwondo... This program offers children a strong foundation in essential character qualities such as courtesy, respect, and discipline. In addition, the program is designed to improve children's motor skills and enhance their ability to pay attention and follow directions.

All classes are taught using the most safe, fun, and exciting instruction methods available for this age group. This program works in conjunction with the Karate for Kids program, thereby emphasizing the same important monthly themes and value system.

Just like in the Karate for Kids program, Tiny Tigers have their own unique victory patch and "Victory Stars." Stars are earned in the same way as the Karate for Kids program, with slight modifications in recognition of the preschool age of the child. Four different colored victory patches are available to accommodate all the stars that can be earned by a high achieving Tiny Tiger. Except for the logo, the four victory patches of the Tigers are the same as the Karate for Kids patches.

Upon graduation from the Tiny Tigers program into the "Junior" or "Big Kid" program, Tigers are rewarded by the opportunity to wear the "Big Kids" or "Karate for Kids" patch.

The rank and testing system used by the Tigers is slightly different than that of the Karate for Kids. Tigers can earn six collectible animal patches to display on their belts as follows:

The Tiger for orange belt

The Cheetah for yellow belt

The Lion for camo belt

The Eagle for green belt

The Phoenix for purple belt

The Dragon for blue belt All six patches, as earned, can be displayed on the child's belt.

Of course, our program will also teach important self-defense tools. Even "tiny tigers" can learn to more effectively defend themselves. The American Taekwondo Association, in partnership with Kidz N Power, have developed a great Stranger Danger course. This program is endorsed by Amber Alert.

How Martial Arts Can Increase Safety Awareness In Children

Picture
This article informs the reader of how martial arts can help increase their child's safety awareness. It also puts CLMA forward as a good option for parents who are interested in doing this.
martial arts

Parents enroll their children in martial arts classes for a variety of reasons. Some kids are overweight or otherwise lacking in physical fitness. Martial arts can help them slim down and become physically active. Others need the discipline and structure inherent to studying martial arts so that they can focus in school and be more helpful around the house. Then there are others who want their kids to learn martial arts so that they are better able to protect themselves.

This is not meant to imply that at Changing Lives Martial Arts we go around turning kids into little Jackie Chan-like fighting machines. However, we do provide them with certain tools and training through martial arts that if the situation demanded, it would allow them to defend themselves against a bully or give them the good sense to extract themselves from a bad situation. The fact is that studying martial arts does help protect children by increasing their overall awareness level and making them more conscious of any potentially dangerous situation, from crossing a street to avoiding a dimly lit alley.

Virginia Beach is certainly not Detroit nor is it New York City. Yet, the unfortunate fact is that potential dangers for children can arise just about anywhere these days. Whether you're an adult or a child, learning martial arts demands that you increase your awareness of your surroundings. This awareness allows true martial artists to stave off most conflicts before they even arise. Sometimes, it's by doing something as simple as crossing to the other side of the street where it is better lit and there are a greater number of people around.

Part of the martial arts training we provide in our Karate for Kids program at Changing Lives Martial Arts is to always be aware of their surroundings, especially when they are walking or biking home from school or from a friend's house. Martial arts is about using your eyes and ears both on and off the mat.

As a seventh degree black belt, I have been teaching martial arts to adults and children alike for more than 20 years now. At Changing Lives Martial Arts, we have developed a unique Karate for Kids program that is specifically designed to teach martial arts to children between the ages of 6 and 12. That program is intended to help kids become more conscientious in every aspect of their life, be it at school, at home or in their social interactions with their peers. Along with that conscientiousness, comes a greater sense of being more safety conscious in general. We teach all of our young martial artists to avoid dangerous situations by using their heads.

If you are interested in finding out more about martial arts and how our Karate for Kids program may be able to help your child become more safety conscious, give us a call at our Virginia Beach Martial Arts headquarters at 757-471-9002 or visit our website: www.atakick.com

Are Your Children “KID SMART?

Picture
Senior Master Thomas’ Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts Tips for Going to and From School More Safely Every day millions of children take to the streets and roadways to get to and from school. They walk, ride their bicycles, take buses, and arrive in automobiles with one purpose-getting to and from school safely. Every year approximately 440,000 public school buses travel more than 4 billion miles to transport 24 million children to and from school and school-related activities. For many children, this experience is a new one, and they may not understand the safety rules. Young children do not have the same frame of reference for safety as adults do. They many not “look before they leap,” which is why it is so important for families to supervise young children and practice safety sills with their older children. The tips noted below will help prepare your children for a safer journey.

Instruct your child to always TAKE A FRIEND when walking or riding his or her bike to and from school. It’s safer and more fun to be with your friends. Walk and ride in well-lit areas, and never take shortcuts. When walking and biking, stay aware or your surroundings and observe all traffic rules in place to more safely share the roads and sidewalks with others.

Senior Master Thomas states; even though there is safety in numbers, it is still not safe for young children to walk to and from school especially if they must take isolated routes before or during daylight. Always provide supervision for your young children to ensure their safe arrival to and from school.

Your child should stay with a group while waiting at the bus stop. If anyone bothers your child while going to and from school, you should teach him or her to get away from that person, and TELL you or another trusted adult. If an adult approaches your child for help or directions, remember that grownups needing help should not ask children for help; they should ask adults.

Instruct your children that if someone they don’t know or feel comfortable with offers a ride, say NO. Children should never hitchhike or accept a ride from someone unless you have told them it is okay. Please visit our website at www.ATAKICK.com and click on a safety video on the Karate For Kids page.

Senior Master Thomas is offering FREE Child Safety Child Abduction Awareness seminars in the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia areas. Picture
Senior Master Thomas states, Know the Rules…. Understand The Safety Tips for Children and Don’t be a Target! Always TAKE A FRIEND with you when playing or going somewhere. It’s safer and more fun.

Always CHECK FIRST with your parents, guardians or trusted adult in charge before you go anywhere or do anything.

Don’t be tricked by people who offer you special treats or gifts. Never accept anything from anyone without your parents’ or guardians’ permission.

Have a neighbor or trusted adult you can call if you feel scared, uncomfortable or confused or if there is an emergency.

Don’t wear clothes or carry items with your name on the outside, and don’t be confused just because a person you don’t know calls out your name. Be aware, be calm !

Be careful when you play. Stay away from pools, canals, and other bodies of water unless you are with a trusted adult. Don’t play near busy streets, or deserted areas, and never take short cuts unless you have your parents’ or guardians’ permission.

Never go alone to malls, movies, video arcades, or parks. Take a friend with you, and always CHECK FIRST with your parents or guardians to make sure it’s okay.

Don’t panic if you feel lost. Identify the safest place to go or person to ask for help in reuniting with your parents or guardians. Safe helper could be a uniformed law-enforcement or security officer, store salesperson with a nametag, person with a nametag who is working at the information booth, or a mother with children. Safety Tips for Parents and Guardians

Picture
Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts Offers General Tips for Parents and Guardians.
Senior Master Thomas wants you to know how to be safe and
DON’T BE A TARGET!

While many parents and guardians feel they are faced with new and unprecedented challenges when trying to keep their children safer in today’s fast-paced and increasingly global society, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children offers these common-sense, general safety tips to help parents and guardians put these challenges into perspective. Parents and guardians should choose opportunities or “teachable” moments to reinforce safety skills.

If an incident occurs in your community, and your children ask about it, speak frankly but with reassurance. Explain to your children that you want to discuss the safety rules with the, so they will know what to do if they are ever confronted with a difficult situation. Make sure you have “safety nets” in place, so your children know there is always someone who can help them. Make sure you know where your children are at all times. Know your children’s friends and make clear with your children about the places and homes they may visit. Make it a rule for your children to check in with you when they arrive or depart from a particular location and when there is a change in plans. You should also let them know when you’re running late or if your plans have changed so they can see the rule is for safety purposes and not being used to “check up” on them.

Never leave children unattended in an automobile, whether it’s running or not. Children should never be left unsupervised or allowed to spend time alone or with others in automobiles, as the potential dangers to their safety outweigh any perceived convenience or “fun.” Remind children to never hitchhike, approach a car or engage in a conversation with anyone within a car they do not know and trust, or go anywhere with anyone without getting your permission first.

Be involved in your children’s activities. As an active participant, you’ll have a better opportunity to observe how the adults in charge interact with your children. If you are concerned about anyone’s behavior, take it up with the sponsoring organization.

Listen to your children. Pay attention if they tell you they don’t want to be with someone or go somewhere. This may be an indication of more than a personality conflict or lack of interest in the activity or event.

We are offering FREE Child Safety, Child Abduction Awareness seminars in the Virginia Beach, Virginia area. This program is being offered absolutely FREE to families that are interested and have children ages 5 years old and older. These seminars will share safety tips, techniques, and strategies.

Child Safety Local Martial Arts News

Local Martial Arts News

Martial Arts News in Virginia Beach, Virginia
Martial Arts News in Chesapeake, Virginia

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake
Believes that Child Safety is more than just a “Stranger Danger” Campaign.

Child Safety is meant to keep children safe.

Today children need to be empowered with positive messages and child safety skills that will build their self- confidence and self- esteem while helping to keep them safer. They need to learn how to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations. And, if ending up in a dangerous or scary situation, children need to do everything they can to get out of that situation. They don’t need to be told the world is a scary place. They watch the news, hear adults talking, and may even experience violence firsthand. Rather, they need to know their parent, guardian, or another trusted adult is there for them if they are in trouble. And they also need to know most adults they encounter in their lives are good people.

In specific situations such as being lost outside, the child safety messages need to be tailored to those circumstances. Children should…
• Not wander away from where they first became lost because staying put may increase the chances of being found. If that place becomes too dangerous, children should go to the nearest safe spot and wait for rescuers.
• Make noise either by yelling, blowing a whistle, or attracting attention in some other way. This will help in bringing someone to their rescue. A simple child safety technique we teach in our Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts program is: Yelling You’re Not My Mommy, You’re Not My Daddy and running away. CLMA teaches simple break away techniques to help ensure children are able to get away if
and when needed. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts and Master Instructor Tracy Lee Thomas have an important “Kidz-N-Power video for you to view at http://atakick.com/index.php/our-programs/karate-kids.html

Parents and guardians should make child safety part of a child’s everyday life in a reassuring way by practicing some of these skills. Whether it’s checking first with a trusted adult, taking a friend, or avoiding and getting out of dangerous situations, there are easy “what- if” scenarios to practice with your children to make sure they “get it.” Make outings to a mall or park a “teachable moment” to help reinforce these skills. This practice will help them know what to do if they become lost or are in danger. Practice these skills on a regular basis to make sure they become second nature.

The 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover, may have been best known for the following quote, “Children are our most valuable natural resource.” Reassure your children that you are there for them, and remind them there are other people who are able to help too.

The local Martial Arts Master Instructor, Tracy Lee Thomas states, “Changing Lives in our community with Martial Arts is a passion of each of the CLMA Instructors we have on our Martial Arts team. It’s about teach reality based life skills, mentally and physically to each student form junior to adult. How Martial Arts Training Can Teach Respect

Picture
This article is about how martial arts can help foster respect. It details how the respectful practices in the training facility are carried over into all aspects of a student’s life.

martial arts

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts is a top ten rated martial arts facility that has been offering all levels of martial arts training in the Virginia Beach area since 1991. We offer a range of different training options for adults and children alike, ranging from our Tiny Tigers program for kids ages 3 to 6 to advanced training for adults in Krav Maga, a hard-styled, realistic fighting system that was developed by the Israeli Defense Forces.

Martial Arts and Respect

There are a number of key principles that underline and unify all of our martial arts training programs. These include courtesy, self-discipline, greater self-esteem and improved self-confidence. However, there is one main principal that underlies all the others, the principle of respect.

Respect is a cornerstone of our philosophy at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts. As a seventh degree black belt with over 20 years of teaching experience, I thoroughly believe that respect is a major key to how martial arts can help improve people's lives. This is particularly true with regard to the young people who take part in our Tiny Tigers, Karate for Kids, and Tae Kwon Do for Teens programs.

The Benefits of Martial Arts for Young People

Our martial arts programs for kids and teens are designed to promote positive behavior both on and off the training mat. The respectful manner in which we conduct our training and interactions at our facility has a powerful effect on our students that is generally carried over into other aspects of their lives. We foster an environment where students are encouraged to respect not only their instructors and fellow students but also themselves. Many parents observe that by practicing respect for themselves and others while training in martial arts, their kids develop a greater sense of respect in other key areas of their lives including at school, at home, and in their social interactions with their peers.

Martial Arts, Discipline, and Respect

In my lifetime of experience as a martial artist, I have come to thoroughly believe that when it comes to the martial arts, you get out of it what you put into it. Martial arts are about a lot more than just learning how to kick or punch someone. Martial arts challenge individuals to push their own personal boundaries and to go beyond them. To do this requires hard work, discipline and perseverance. This same hard work discipline and perseverance that students put into improving themselves as martial artists carries over into their lives as a whole. The respect they develop for their teachers, fellow students and their own abilities is projected out to the world leading students to become better citizens, better students and better people overall.

If you would like to find out more information about how martial arts training can teach respect or any other aspects of our training please contact our headquarters at 757-471-9002 or visit us on the Web at www.atakick.com

How Karate For Kids Teaches Discipline

Picture
This article is about how the Karate for Kids program can help teach kids discipline. It goes on to detail some of the ways this will occur.

karate for kids

As a martial arts instructor, I have been teaching karate for kids for more than 20 years. During that time, I have found parents bring their children to our unique Karate for Kids program for a variety of reasons. Some kids are overweight and Karate for Kids helps them to slim down, improve their body image and increase self-esteem. Others are bullied at school or lack confidence and find that martial arts bolsters their self-worth and helps them develop the confidence to be leaders. However, a majority of parents seem to appreciate that our Karate for Kids program is a great means of teaching their children better discipline.

Studying martial arts is hard work for anyone. To improve at it requires pushing yourself to surpass previous boundaries, whether they are physical, mental or otherwise. Our Karate for Kids program is an excellent means of instilling a sense of the value of this hard work in young people. Many kids come into one of our four award winning martial arts school locations for the Karate for Kids program lacking focus or direction. Many others have had disciplinary problems at home or at school. Karate for Kids teaches even the most rambunctious among them to be good citizens, show respect and get along well with others.

Martial arts is a physical discipline and to progress to the next level you must apply yourself. For students to do well in our Karate for Kids program, they must apply themselves, often with a focus and determination they have not known before. Many parents observe that after some time in the Karate for Kids program, their once rambunctious kids begin to carry that focus and determination over into other areas of their life like their school work.

As a seventh degree black belt with two decades teaching experience, part of my work has been to develop Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts' unique Karate for Kids Life Skills system. This system was developed in order to help children with various essential life skills such as, respect, courtesy, self-discipline, self-esteem, self-confidence, and listening skills. Some common results observed by parents whose children participate in the Karate for Kids program include improved grades at school and displaying better social skills when interacting with their peers.

Our Karate for Kids program is intended to assist students in three fundamental areas off the martial arts mat. These are at school at home and socially. We also invite parents to create their own "wish list" to better allow our instructors to target specific problem behaviors and help minimize or eliminate them. And while our Karate for Kids program is ideal for teaching kids discipline, most kids stay in the program because it is fun.

If you would like to find out more about how our Karate for Kids program can help to teach your child discipline, contact our headquarters at 757-471-9002 or visit our website at www.atakick.com and check out the Karate for Kids ages 6-12 section.

3 Ways That Martial Arts Can Enhance Your Life Skills

Picture
Changing Lives Martial Arts operates four of the country's top rated Taekwondo studios in and around the Virginia Beach area. Enhance various life skills while you explore your capabilities and get a good workout too. martial arts

With more than 1,500 martial arts schools teaching hundreds of thousands of students, the American Taekwondo Association is both well-known and well-respected within the martial arts community. Anyone who's ever seen an action adventure movie is no doubt aware of the prevalence martial arts plays in the cinema, but there's a lot more to it than just an exciting action scene on the big screen.

As a youngster watching the Karate Kid, who hasn't wondered if they could be a karate kid too? The quick answer is, yes, nearly anyone, young or old, can find martial arts instruction and become competent in one or more forms of self-defense. An effective martial arts training regimen, however, teaches the student so much more than mere kicking and punching. Good instruction includes a long list of lessons in life.

Martial Arts Training For Young and Old Alike

Whether you happen to be eight or 80, it's never too soon or too late to learn. Remember, learning martial arts isn't just for self-defense training, although that's the part that gives many their incentive to begin. For some, the important aspect of martial arts training is physical fitness. For others, especially parents of younger children, fostering discipline in their child's regular activities is a primary consideration. Here at Changing Lives Martial Arts, teaching children is our main focus and we concentrate on a great deal more than just fighting and self-defense techniques. We also dwell on essential character qualities such as:

  • Courtesy
  • Respect
  • Discipline
  • Paying attention
  • Following directions
If you live in the Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk area, Changing Lives Martial Arts has a convenient location in Red Mill, Greenbrier, Edinburgh, Western Branch and Princess Anne. First opened in 1991, my martial arts studios are consistently rated in the top ten of all ATA locations nationwide. We work hard to provide the very best teaching environment possible and the results are both gratifying and easy to observe.

Martial arts training can enhance life skills along many avenues and can be applied to any age group. For a six-year old, it might primarily be discipline and respect. For someone middle-aged, it could be dealing with anger management or self-esteem. For women feeling vulnerable, effective self-defense techniques may be paramount, while an elder student may be looking for beneficial physical activity.

There's no doubt martial arts practice can provide a serious workout, but the techniques utilized can be of varying intensity. Kids from six to 12 will have a different routine than those in the seniors group, although many of the underlying lessons may be the same.

On the most basic level, martial arts training will work in 3 areas:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Emotional
Similar to practicing meditation, it's good for body and soul.

I am Senior ATA Master Tracy Lee Thomas, offering the highest quality martial arts training available in the Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and the entire Hampton Roads area. Come in and see us and take a free lesson. Contact us at 757-471-9002 or www.atakick.com

How Martial Arts Training Can Lead To Better Grades In School

Picture
This article explains how martial arts training helps to develop those qualities in a student that lead to good grades in school. Key among those qualities are discipline and self-control, a sense of self-worth and self-esteem, and courtesy and respect for others.

martial arts

Martial arts training and academic training have a common goal. That goal is to create a transformation in attitude and action within a student, leading to a successful, productive member of the community. In school, achievement is rewarded with higher scores or good grades. Training develops those qualities necessary to meet the rigorous challenges of academic life that lead to those good grades. Key among those qualities learned in martial arts training are discipline and self-control, a sense of self-worth and self-esteem, and courtesy and respect for others.

At Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts, our students develop discipline, respect, and courtesy through a martial arts curriculum that focuses on fitness, self-defense, and self-confidence within the context of home, school and community. We involve parents in our activities, volunteer in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake area schools, and partner with local businesses.

Discipline and self-control are qualities necessary both in school and in martial arts. In school, a student must learn to pay attention to the teacher and not be distracted in order to learn the day's lesson. Likewise, focus and concentration is necessary to succeed in martial arts. Our students practice shutting out distractions, working under pressure, and concentrating on the immediate activity. This practice in martial arts carries over into the schoolroom.

Self-worth and self-esteem develop from accomplishing goals. In school, this could be completing a book on time or receiving a good grade on a test. In martial arts, this can come from receiving an award or moving up in rank. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts students receive victory stars for outstanding performance in activities or tournament competition. They also receive these awards by doing well in school or at home. This way, our martial arts students work toward larger goals by setting smaller goals and working toward them. This process of achieving short-term or small goals on the way toward achieving larger goals is critical to academic success as well as martial arts success.

Courtesy and respect for others shows a sense of cooperation, appreciation of others, modesty and community. In school, courtesy and respect can be shown by helping a struggling classmate or by not ridiculing fellow students when they answer questions incorrectly. Martial arts students show courtesy and respect to others most often by bowing and recognizing the achievements of others, by being quiet during instruction so that others can hear and concentrate, or by simply saying “thank you” at the end of a hard workout.

Our martial arts students learn to become good leaders as their training progresses by showing respect to their instructors, by learning to listen, and by being open to learning new things. This not only applies to leadership in the martial arts, but also in the schoolroom and the community-at-large.

Changing Lives ATA martial arts has four locations in the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake area to serve the community. We invite you to call our headquarters at 757-471-9002 or visit our website at www.atakick.com

9 Steps To Help Your Child Succeed In School

Picture
Changing Lives Martial Arts & Kidz’n Power Tips
By Senior Master T. L. Thomas www.ATAKICK.com

9 Steps To Help Your Child Succeed In School
  1. Develop A Schedule.
  2. Many families today are incredibly busy. In the rush to meet all the demands upon each family member from school, work, sports, arts and socializing – school sometimes gets crowded to the rear. One way to prevent that from happening is to develop a firm but flexible schedule – allowing sufficient time to meet each of the essentials.

  3. Get Plenty Of Rest & Eat Right.
  4. Many students simply do not get enough sleep. Eight hours is actually the minimum number of hours a child should sleep each night. It is best to get more sleep. Adequate sleep is needed for each day to ensure optimal school performance. Poor nutrition and skipped meals lead to the same feelings of exhaustion and weakness that come from lack of sleep. Schedule in meals that include a good breakfast and minimal fast food. Make sure there are plenty of healthful snacks available for after school – like fruit, raw veggies, cheese and popcorn.

  5. Teach The Importance Of Good Focus And Concentration.
  6. Help your children develop great focus and listening skills beginning at an early age. If your child struggles with staying focused, look for a program like martial arts training that emphasizes these life skills as a part of their educational foundation. Building great focus and concentration skills is one of the most powerful skills for improving and maintaining good grades in school.

  7. Physical Activity.
  8. Physical activity is a must to maintain a well balanced life style. Martial arts is a great way that a family can kick together and stick together. The bond created in the ATA will last a life time. “Many times, students lack the confidence and self esteem to succeed in the class room”; states Senior Master Thomas. As a Master Instructor Senior Master Thomas of Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts teaches the necessary life skills for both the youth and adults to succeed within the community.

  9. Make Homework A Priority.
  10. Skipped homework can shipwreck an otherwise excellent grade average. Allow sufficient time for homework to be completed in a distraction–free atmosphere. Preferably the time should be after the student has had a chance to unwind from school yet still early enough to feel fresh and alert. Help your children learn the importance of discipline in every area of their lives. “Make a difference today and assist them with their future” says Senior Master Thomas.

  11. Lavish Praise/Confidence Is The Key.
  12. Be certain he knows that many people struggle in that subject; it does not mean he is stupid. Praise each success as he progresses no matter how small. Offer help, or even tutoring if needed, but don't force help if your child prefers to work independently. Sometimes the goals that are met after a tough fight are the most enjoyable.

  13. Keep Communication Open.
  14. Take time every day to listen to your child. Be certain every conversation is not dominated by you. Let your child tell his experiences at school, with his teacher and with other students, then if problems arise, you have a better understanding of the circumstances that may have led up to them.

  15. Keep Expectations Realistic.
  16. Keep goals reachable to avoid frustration and poor self–image. A positive and realistic praise is needed when a child does well.

  17. Be Honest.
  18. Many children naturally want to do as well as their parents – or better! So, when you reminisce about your own school days, be certain to tell about your failures as well as your successes.

Changing Lives Martial Arts is now accepting new students through an evaluation process. To experience the difference at one of the four locations please contact us at 757-471-9002 and schedule the evaluation for your child.

Better Grades

April 07, 2010

National Press Release: ATA Martial Arts Changes Lives In Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia.

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake

“Helping students improve better grades by training in ATA martial arts”.

ATA Martial Arts is well known throughout the Hampton Roads area on beneficial training in martial arts for children, teens, and adults; however, studies show that the earlier your child starts martial arts, the more it can help him or her throughout their developmental stages. Changing Lives Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake encourage your children to grow in body, mind and spirit. As a TOP TEN Martial Arts School in the ATA, Changing Lives Martial Arts is a leading martial arts training facility. ATA Martial Arts Schools in the State of Virginia are top notch MA training academies. Please see below for Virginia Martial Art Schools.

Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas, 7th Degree Master Instructor, recommends that children participate in physical and mental activities to encourage physical maturity, personality growth and socialization with others. Developing these skills will in turn promote better grades since children will be practicing focus, self motivation and more. Not only does learning martial arts meet the developmental needs of children, it also effectively enhances their physical fitness levels and improves scholastic grade point average.

Changing Lives Martial Arts has been recognized throughout the Virginia Beach and Chesapeake areas as a way to give kids the ability to face the daily pressure in school and life. Martial Arts helps to improve focus, requires concentration and martial arts students need to pay attention to the instruction of the teacher. To be successful in martial arts, children must learn to listen well and carefully absorb the lessons. These same life skills can easily be applied throughout their schools years to help improve their grades.

Martial Arts builds confidence in children. Other than building self-confidence, martial arts can bring many positive changes to help a child greatly improve their grades in school.

1. Through martial arts, children will be more disciplined. Self discipline is a difficult trait to develop. Studies show that in many learning environments children often struggle not because they lack intelligence, but because they lack the necessary discipline to get better grades. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts encourages children to practice their life skills in school as much as they do during training. Martial Arts classes offer repetition, detailed drills, and consistency that build discipline in a positive manner using positive correction.
2. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts believes it is very important and essential for children to be physically fit. Taking martial arts classes definitely helps keep children active and provides a fun environment as well. Not only do martial arts classes build overall fitness, but it also helps a child develop their coordination. Both of these attributes can improve grades. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts is offering a free 3 Day Confidence Course at all their Virginia Beach and Chesapeake locations. Visit us on the web at www.atakick.com.
3. Self-motivation is all a key life skill for better grades with martial arts. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts actually tracks individual progress and success as students work up to different belt ranks. Children work for their own motivation factors while building awareness that they are actually responsible for their actions. As adults, we understand that our actions cause our successes; CLMA Martial Arts applies this lesson throughout each child’s journey in martial arts. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake would like you to take that first step. They encourage parents to allow their child (children) to participate in our Free 3 Day Martial Arts Confidence Course. There are multiple Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts locations to help to assist your child in achieving their goals for better grades. For more information, please visit us at www.atakick.com

While this comes as belated news, the accomplishment of young martial artist Joseph Feser definitely warrants Game On recognition. At the American Taekwondo Association's annual World Songahm Taekwondo Championships, Joseph earned second in weapons and third place in forms and sparring for boys 12 and under in Little Rock, Ark., in June. The student of Tracy Lee Thomas at ATA Black Belt Academy proved himself to be among the elite of more than 6,000 competitors from around the globe-including the art's homeland of South Korea.

How to Talk to “Your Teen” about Bullying

How to Talk to “Your Teen” about Bullying

Virginia Beach Martial Arts- Taekwondo-Karate- -Krav Maga
Chesapeake Martial Arts- Taekwondo-Karate- -Krav Maga

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, VA is concerned for the teens in our community.

Suicides by teens who have been harassed by bullying and cyber-bullying (bullying by electronic means such as email, Facebook, MySpace, on websites or via text message) are in the news and on the minds of parents throughout Hampton Roads. But rather than simply worrying and hovering over your teen, it's important to address the topic NOW, before any situation in your teen's life escalates.

Here are some tips and tools for parents to use when talking to their teen about bullying, anti-bullying and being bullied. These bullying tips and tools are from Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts Master Instructor, Senior Master T. L. Thomas, 7th Degree Black Belt owner of multiple martial arts and Krav Maga Academies in South Eastern Virginia area.

Open the Conversation Now—Don't Wait for Your Teen

Beginning a conversation with your teenager can be difficult, but the topic of bullying is crucial. Use the recent news stories as a conversation opener with your teen. Open the communication flow and listen to what your teen has to say. Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas, suggests, "It is best to feel your child out and let him/her talk in a manner that is comfortable for them. Listen more and speak less. Try to remain calm and neutral to see where your teen takes the topic. As a parent, I understand it takes courage to speak openly with your teen. A quote I often think about from Winston Churchill, Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. It is time as parents and mentors of teens that we take the time to listen.” Changing Lives Martial Arts and Krav Maga training systems is very unique as it has a structured system and class planners in how they teach various martial arts “LIFE SKILLS” such as enhanced self- confidence, improved self-esteem, and self-respect that will change a teenagers life forever.

When Your Teen Opens Up, DO NOT Shut Him/Her Down.

When your teens feels comfortable enough to bring a bullying situation to your attention, sit down and listen. Try not to overreact by getting emotional and angry. Most importantly, don’t judge and resist the urge to place blame or cross-examine your teenager. Keep calm and use your self-control life skills to keep the line of communication open. Your teen needs to know you care and that you are going to help the situation by responding to their concern in a positive, effective manner. Use this time to listen by giving gentle prompts about how your teen felt during the bullying. This will encourage your teen to continue sharing and opening up to you. Sometimes our teens just need to know that they have your love and support. Keep in mind, no one wants to be embarrassed, but they may want positive help but don’t know who to turn to on possible life threatening occasions.

Prepare Your Teen to Stand Up to Bullying, try a Martial Arts Class or a Krav Maga Class.

As parents, we may worry that we sometimes sound like a broken record, but here are some life skill areas you can NEVER talk about too often with your teens:

  • Making good decisions in their treatment of peers, setting the example by not excluding others can often create an anti-bullying atmosphere.
  • Standing up for what they believe in when they are around peers who treat others poorly. Self-control, self-esteem, and self-confidence are just a few of the many life skills taught at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts and these skills give teens the necessary tools to stand up for themselves and their peers.
  • Emphasizing that they NEVER have to "just take it" if they are being harassed in any way, encourage your teen to share what is happening to them with a trusted adult.
  • Feeling good about who they are and loving themselves. Self-esteem is a key component to stop bullying. Martial arts is proven to build self-esteem. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts and Krav Maga in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake offers a 3 day Confidence Course for teens. For a location near you, visit www.atakick.com .
  • Letting your teen know that you ALWAYS "have their back", value and love EVERYTHING about them. Teens need to understand that even if you don’t believe in some of their choices or decisions, they will always have your love, understanding, and support.
  • Help teens understand that there is a solution to every problem with bullying. By using life skills in their everyday lives, they can create actions used to solve situations and achieve desired results.
  • “Don’t Be A Target”, states; Tracy Lee Thomas. “we must guide our children with positive life skills to create a pattern in dealing with the right choice in life. Martial Arts and Krav Maga builds confidence and creates a well-rounded youth who can and will make the right choices based on training, role playing and positive mentorship”. At CLMA students learn to hold their head high, look others in the eye, and display strong self confidence that wards possible harm away and choosing to NOT Be a Target of bullying.
Let’s teach the youth in our community… Don’t Be A Victim and Don’t Be A Target !

Both the students and Instructors at Changing Lives are passionate about creating a community atmosphere that will put an end to bullying as it is an unacceptable in our community.

Tips On Bullying in School

Picture
Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts Presents Parenting Tips on Bullying in School

Virginia Beach Martial Arts- Taekwondo-Karate- -Krav Maga
Chesapeake Martial Arts- Taekwondo-Karate- -Krav Maga

Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas of Changing Lives Martial Arts is sad to find out that almost 10% of school age children are the victims of a bully. Bullying is most common by the second grade and occurs throughout life. Bullying can be both physical and verbal, and can range from mild teasing to pushing and hitting. Bullying is even done quite often on the internet.

The team of instructors at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia is trying to make a difference by building strong leaders in the community through Martial Arts and Krav Maga. It concerns Tracy Lee Thomas that children are being victimized by their peers. Being a victim of a bully can lead to a child avoiding school and developing anxiety about attending class.

Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts has an Anti-Bullying Karate for Kids Program and encourages parents to enroll their children.

Research and various case studies show us that victims of bullies are usually stereotyped as being loners, passive, quiet, sensitive, anxious, and with low self-esteem they are often smaller and/or weaker than the other children of the same age and they may even come from an overprotective home. Being a victim of a bully can cause your child to feel insecure, lower their self-confidence and have feelings of low self-worth and poor self-esteem.  This may ultimately lead to depression and/or violence, either against themselves or against the bully. “Awareness is the key for parents, watching for changes in attitude, behavior and daily actions” states Sr. Master Instructor, Tracy Lee Thomas.

Unfortunately, victims of bullies often do not seek help or confide in anyone about the bullying, either because of shame or embarrassment or fear that it will be worse if the bully finds out. It is important to look for signs in your children. One of these signs could be, school avoidance behaviors, especially chronic nonspecific complaints, such as headaches or stomachaches, or they may have trouble sleeping. Also, if your child seems afraid or anxious about going to school, has a change in his/her personality or his/her behavior, or a change in his/her grades, you should consider that he/she may be a victim of a bully at school. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts teaches students and the youth within the community “LIFE SKILLS” that will change a child’s life and teach them…”Don’t Be A Target” and Don’t Be A Victim” in life.  “Quality Life Skills such as; Self-Respect, Self-Esteem, Self-Confidence and enhanced social skills offer our students the ability to manage these concerns” states, Changing Lives Martial Arts Master Instructor.

If you suspect that your child may be a victim of a bully, you can ask them if they are being teased at school, or ask more open-ended questions, such as “What do you like to do at recess?” or “Who do you sit with at lunch?” Be open and listen to your child and most of all utilize your instinct as a parent.

Children are most often bullied at school, usually on the playground or at lunchtime when children are more likely to have minimal supervision, or it may occur in the hallways between classes or on the school bus. In any situation, the better supervised children are, the less likely that bullying will occur. Role playing on how to deal with verbal and physical bullying is taught in classes at Changing Lives Martial Arts in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia.

Children who are bullies may have problems with low self-esteem, but newer theories argue that bullies are driven more by a desire to have power over others and to be “in control” because they have poor self-esteem and that they have little empathy for their victims. They may also be aggressive, bossy, controlling, have a low level of self control, and have difficulty making friends. Bullies are also more likely to develop criminal behaviors as adults. Characteristics such as these are not accepted or healthy in any community. Changing Lives Martial Arts teaches how to strategically recognize, manage and deal with such improper behavior.

While this may help you understand why a bully acts the way they do, this doesn’t necessarily help your child deal with the problem when it occurs. Changing Lives Martial Arts offers classes that deal directly with these concerns. Things that you should avoid include teaching your child to fight back, since they may get hurt and it may also get him/her in trouble at school.  We need to teach our children to be assertive and to show self-confidence at all times. Interact socially, and become a user of quality life skills that will protect them from becoming a victim.

Parents often turn to enrolling their children in a martial arts program, and while this can be helpful to build their self-esteem and help them be more assertive, the goal of taking the classes should not be so that he/she can fight back but to instill confidence and enhance their self-esteem. Changing Lives Martial Arts teaches two levels of Anti-Bullying, Level I is “Safe Defense” through quality life skills they learn the … “Don’t Be A Target” program. First and foremost they need to demonstrate and hold themselves in a manner that is not one that bullies see as a target. Second, they learn “Self Defense” through verbal practice and physical drills and skills students become aware of how a bully may attack them as an individual.

It may also help to talk with school officials about the problem (so that they can better supervise your child, observe the bully and intervene when necessary) and teach your child not to respond too strongly to the bully (either by crying or giving in to demands), because the bully is more likely to continue bullying your child if he/she knows that they will get a response.

Schedule a meeting between the parents of the children involved and school officials so everyone is aware and the potential and harmful threat may be dealt with.

Changing Lives Martial Arts can teach your child to walk away (but while staying calm and not running), tell the bully to stop and leave him/her alone, or to use humor and come up with a good comeback when a bully teases him/her. It can also help if your child has high self-esteem and if he/she has some strong friendships, so that he/she is less of a target. Teaching your child to make eye contact with others (especially the bully) and to talk with a strong voice may also help. Role playing situations where he/she is bullied may be helpful in teaching how to respond.

It is also important for the bully to understand that bullying is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. If the bullying behavior or other aggressive behaviors persist, then he/she may need to speak with a trusted adult like a family member, friend or even their martial arts instructor as a mentor.

No one should ever become a Target or Victim in life. CLMA takes bullying serious and stands to protect the youth within the community. STAND UP & STAND PROUD!

Safety Gear Tip

SAFETY GEAR

Senior Master Thomas
Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts
http://www.atakick.com

Is all this gear really necessary?

Last year my son grew six inches and gained 50 pounds; translation, I had to buy protective ATA foot gear a second time.  It’s so expensive and he is heading for another growth spurt.  Is all this equipment necessary?

YES! A lot more is changing than height and weight.  We notice the emotional and physical changes in children as they grow however, the mental and skeletal changes we can’t see are just as important and unpredictable.  During growth spurts the bones are growing quicker than the muscles and tendons.  Even as they reach their full height, their skeletal and muscular systems are not fully developed, making
children vulnerable to injury. During the growth spurts, your child will probably be less coordinated until he or she adjusts to the physical change. This is normal, but can cause injuries if protective gear does not fit properly. Are you considering buying a larger size?

ATA Mouth guards and athletic cups are relatively inexpensive, especially considering the protection they offer.  Make sure they fit properly and replace them with new ones as needed.  ATA Head gear should also fit properly. Tight gear may cause head-aches, but loose gear may slip and blind an oncoming punch or not offer the protection where needed. As children advance in martial arts, the foot and hand gear will usually wear out before it can be out-grown. If the foot gear is a little large, consider wearing padded insteps for a better fit. Be certain the fingers fit in the hand gears’ finger tabs.

Periodically check the ATA equipment at all flex or stress points for wear; this is any place the gear bends, flexes or has an air hole.  If you have any questions about fit or wear, ask an instructor. Ask and watch for sales and let friends and relatives know during gift giving holidays if there is something they can order from the school.

Can I use old equipment, used or purchase from another location?

The answer is no to this question, as the academy policy is all gear is to be purchased through Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts.  All gear will be appropriately fitted and ordered specifically for each student.  This is why we do not carry stock on these items.  Our goal is “SAFETY FIRST” and to ensure the longevity of the gear. Example: a toe sticking out past the foot pad can cut or bruise another student. Too tight of gear could break a student’s toe or curl the toe as they are jumping while training.

To assist in preventing bone and muscle injuries during growth spurts, be certain your child warms-up and then stretches before any physical activity. Stop if pain occurs, because this is not normal and can
cause serious injury.  Train your child to avoid continuous repetitious motions that can affect growth development. Call your health care provider with any questions or concerns you may have. If at any time during a training session a student feels uncomfortable or unsure they are to speak to an instructor immediately.  Please teach your child that it is o.k. to ask the instructor a question.  Parents may also ask after class or during class if they feel it is urgent. Coaching or speaking, hand signally a child from the lobby is “Unsafe” and is not permitted on the premises of any of our locations.

We thank all of our students in advance for their support in ensuring the safety of our students while training at CLMA.

Safety Tips

Picture
Virginia Beach Martial Arts Safety Tips for Parents, Teachers, and Guardians.
Help Keep Their Children Safe & Don’t Be A Target!

~Senior Master Thomas, 7th Degree~ While many parents and guardians feel they are faced with new and unprecedented challenges when trying to keep their children safer in today’s fast-paced and increasingly global society, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children offers these common-sense, general safety tips to help parents and guardians put these challenges into perspective. Parents and guardians should choose opportunities or “teachable” moments to reinforce safety skills. (www.ATAKICK.com) If an incident occurs in your community, and your children ask about it, speak frankly but with reassurance. Explain to your children that you want to discuss the safety rules with the, so they will know what to do if they are ever confronted with a difficult situation. Master Thomas states: “Make sure you have “safety nets” in place, so your children know there is always someone who can help them.”

As an active participant and as an active parent, you’ll have a better opportunity to observe how the adults in charge interact with your children. “If you are concerned about anyone’s behavior, if you have a “gut instinct or intuition” take it up with the sponsoring organization.” States; Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas. Listen to your children. Pay attention if they tell you they don’t want to be with someone or go somewhere. This may be an indication of more than a personality conflict or lack of interest in the activity or event. Speaking to your child, parent awareness, and being an active listener are essential in every aspect of your child’s safety.
