Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts hits it big in local communities. An affiliated member of the American Taekwondo Association. The American Taekwondo Association (ATA) was founded in 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska by Haeng Ung Lee of South Korea. It is one of the largest taekwondo organizations in the United States, and in association with the Songahm Taekwondo Federation (STF) and World Traditional Taekwondo Union (WTTU), is one of the largest in the world, claiming a membership of 350,000.[1] The ATA is currently headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas and led by Soon Ho Lee.[2]

ATA-affiliated schools also host self defense seminars to teach techniques for emergency escape from an attacker.[3]

Sonngahm Taekwondo Songahm Taekwondo is the style of martial arts practiced at ATA affiliated schools. Songahm means "Pine Tree and Rock."[4] According to the organization, the term Songahm itself represents "Evergreen strength the year round, long life and a symbol of unchanging human loyalty"[citation needed] as represented by the pine tree and the rock. Soon Ho Lee gave the name, Songahm, and its meaning to his brother, Haeng Ung Lee years before H.U. Lee founded the ATA. In the ATA, the student is compared to a growing pine tree, from a seed (white belt) to a massive tree (black belt).

According to the ATA, practitioners of Songahm Taekwondo study poome sae (forms, a preset combination of offensive and defensive techniques, designed to simulate self-defense techniques being used upon multiple opponents), gyeo-roo-gi (sparring), one-steps (scripted sparring segments), self defense, rebreakable plastic board breaking, weapons and leadership. The ATA has a leadership program that allows students to work as junior leaders/instructors in junior classes. This helps the trainee instructors become qualified taekwondo instructors and earn the ATA title of Certified Instructor.[4]

According to the ATA each belt has a symbolic meaning that compares the student's growth in taekwondo to the growth of a pine tree:

  • White belt - "Pure and without the knowledge of Songahm Taekwondo. As with the Pine Tree, the seed must now be planted and nourished to develop strong roots."[5]
  • Orange belt - "The sun is beginning to rise. As with the morning's dawn, only the beauty of the sunrise is seen rather than the immense power."[6]
  • Yellow belt - "The seed is beginning to see the sunlight."[7]
  • Camouflage belt - "The sapling is hidden amongst the taller pines and must now fight its way upwards."[8]
  • Green belt - "The pine tree is beginning to develop and grow in strength."[9]
  • Purple belt - "Coming to the mountain. The tree is in mid-growth and now the path becomes steep."[10]
  • Blue belt - "The tree reaches for the sky towards new heights."[11]
  • Brown belt - "The tree is firmly rooted in the earth"[12]
  • Red belt - "The sun is setting. The first phase of growth has been accomplished."[13]
  • 1st Degree Black Belt Recommended (half red and half black in appearance) - "The dawn of a new day. The sun breaks through the darkness."
  • 1st Degree Black Belt - "Begin planting seeds for the future."[14]
  • 2nd Degree Black Belt - "With your noble character, you will develop a new permanence in life." [4]
  • 3rd Degree Black Belt - "Peace of mind and tranquility." [4]
  • 4th Degree Black Belt - "Crest of granite mountain." [4]
  • 5th Degree Black Belt - "Mastered all kinds of knowledge and utilizes this to do many things." [4]
  • 6th Degree Black Belt - "Long Life." [citation needed]
Belt and rank system The American Taekwondo Association uses a rank system divided into two series: the colored belt series, and the black belt series. The purposes of a rank system include establishing a chain of command, and measurement of student progress. Each series has nine ranks within it due to the significance of the number nine as the highest attainable goal of a measurable endeavor in oriental culture.[4][dubiousdiscuss]

The use of nine levels in the colored belt and black belt systems, is rooted in Korean numerology and has been explained by General Choi (nine is an important number in Korean culture). The increased number of smaller goals provided by nine levels of colored belt rank was designed "for added motivation by giving many short term goals to achieve and eliminating having to remain in a single color for several months at a time" and likely satisfies the need of many American students for immediate gratification.[5]

Each rank from orange belt to second degree black belt may be held either as a Recommended (R) or Decided (D) rank. The "decided" rank is a half step above the "recommended" rank. Some schools denote this rank with a piece of black tape around the end of the belt hanging on the student's right side. Other schools show the recommended rank with dual colored belts. The higher rank would be worn as the top half of the belt and the lesser rank as the bottom half of the belt. Decided ranks wear the full color belt. At promotional rank testings, students may receive a "Full Pass," "Half Pass," or "No Change." In rare cases where students have prior martial arts experience, they may be promoted by 1½ ranks or "double test" and get a full two rank promotion. For example, a decided Camo Belt (6D) could go half a rank to recommended Green Belt (Half Green/Half Camo - 5R), a full rank to decided Green Belt (Solid Green - 5D), or stay the same. And in extreme cases, if they go 1½ ranks, they would become recommended Purple Belt (Half Purple/Half Green - 4R) or "double Test" and achieve decided Purple Belt (Solid Purple - 4D).[citation needed]

Colored belt series
  • 9th Grade White Belt
  • 8th Grade Orange Belt Recommended (8R)
  • 8th Grade Orange Belt Decided (8D)
  • 7th Grade Yellow Belt Recommended (7R)
  • 7th Grade Yellow Belt Decided (7D)
  • 6th Grade Camouflage Belt Recommended (6R)
  • 6th Grade Camouflage Belt Decided (6D)
  • 5th Grade Green Belt Recommended (5R)
  • 5th Grade Green Belt Decided (5D)
  • 4th Grade Purple Belt Recommended (4R)
  • 4th Grade Purple Belt Decided (4D)
  • 3rd Grade Blue Belt Recommended (3R)
  • 3rd Grade Blue Belt Decided (3D)
  • 2nd Grade Brown Belt Recommended (2R)
  • 2nd Grade Brown Belt Decided (2D)
  • 1st Grade Red Belt Recommended (1R)
  • 1st Grade Red Belt Decided (1D)
Black belt series
  • 1st Degree Black Belt Recommended (1BR, Red/Black Belt)
  • 1st Degree Black Belt Decided (1BD)
  • 2nd Degree Black Belt Recommended (2BR)
  • 2nd Degree Black Belt Decided (2BD)
  • 3rd Degree Black Belt (3BD, 3rd-9th degree are "Decided" ranks - there are no "Recommendeds")
  • 4th Degree Black Belt (4BD)
  • 5th Degree Black Belt (5BD)
  • 6th Degree Black Belt (6BD) Eligible for the title Master
  • 7th Degree Black Belt (7BD) Eligible for the title Senior Master
  • 8th Degree Black Belt (8BD) Eligible for the title Chief Master
  • 9th Degree Black Belt (9BD) Grand Master[15]
For recommended Black Belt ranks, the student is required to successfully pass testing for their next decided rank within 6 months of achieving their current recommended rank. Failure to do so would result in the student being returned to their next lowest decided rank (i.e. a 2nd Degree recommended would be returned to 1st Degree decided).

The honorary rank of 10th Degree Black Belt, styled "Eternal Grand Master", was bestowed upon Haeng Ung Lee following his death in 2000. The rank was sponsored and awarded by Grand Masters of other major martial arts,[citation needed] many of whom attended Haeng Ung Lee's funeral.[16]

Mastership Upon attaining the rank of 6th Degree black belt, the next step is earning the mantle of "Master Instructor"; this is not automatic. A 5th Degree may only test for 6th Degree at the Songahm Taekwondo World Championships, held in Little Rock, Arkansas each June. The new 6th Degree will have new criteria which must be met in order to apply for Mastership, and cannot be awarded until Worlds the following year. Similarly, there is a minimum period of a year between earning a 7th Degree and the Senior Master title, as well as 8th Degree and the Chief Master title. Mastership is only earned after many years of dedication to the ATA,[citation needed] which is why Masters are styled "Instructors of Instructors." [4]

Tiny Tigers The Taekwondo for Tiny Tigers program for preschool students (2-6) uses patches with animals on them instead of black stripes on the belt to denote the half step graduations: Tiger for orange belt; Cheetah for yellow; Lion for camo; Eagle for green; Phoenix for purple; Dragon for blue; Cobra for brown; and Panther for red. [17]

Forms A form (poome sae) is a series of kicks, blocks and other techniques put together in a set pattern. The pattern becomes more complex as students progress through the ranks. For example, the 9th grade white belt form contains eighteen moves. The 5th grade green belt form has 34 moves, the 1st degree black belt form has 81 moves, and the 9th degree black belt form has 99 moves. If all of the forms (eighteen in all) are done in sequence, they form the pattern of a nine pointed star (eight outer points plus a center point) referred to as the Songahm Star. According to the ATA, when the outer points of the Songahm star are connected, they form a circle which exemplifies complete balance. The ATA claims that forms create a contextual application for new material learned at each belt level.[4]

Colored belts
  • 9th Grade White Belt - Songahm 1 - 18 moves [5]
  • 8th Grade Orange Belt - Songahm 2 - 23 moves[6]
  • 7th Grade Yellow Belt - Songahm 3 - 28 moves[7]
  • 6th Grade Camouflage Belt - Songahm 4 - 31 moves[8]
  • 5th Grade Green Belt - Songahm 5 - 34 moves[9]
  • 4th Grade Purple Belt - In Wha 1 - 44 moves[10]
  • 3rd Grade Blue Belt - In Wha 2 - 42 moves[11]
  • 2nd Grade Brown Belt - Choong Jung 1 - 44 moves[12]
  • 1st Grade Red Belt - Choong Jung 2 - 46 moves [13]
Black belts
  • 1st Degree Black Belt - Shim Jun - 81 moves [14]
  • 2nd Degree Black Belt - Jung Yul - 82 moves [4]
  • 3rd Degree Black Belt - Chung San - 83 moves [4]
  • 4th Degree Black Belt - Sok Bong - 84 moves [4]
  • 5th Degree Black Belt - Chung Hae - 95 moves [4]
  • 6th Degree Black Belt - Jhang Soo - 96 moves [4]
  • 7th Degree Black Belt - Chul Joon - 97 moves
  • 8th Degree Black Belt - Sah Boo - 98 moves
  • 9th Degree Black Belt - Dong Seung - 99 moves [citation needed]
[One-step sparring One steps are a short combination of blocks, strikes and kicks that serve as a precursor to free sparring. The ATA aims to teach students to put moves into combinations, focus their techniques at a specific target, learn distancing and gain self control. There are three specific one steps for each belt level starting at white belt and ending with green. As with the forms, the one steps become more complex as a student progresses in rank.[5][6][7][8][9]

Uniform Students and instructors alike each wear a traditional white dobok with the appropriate belt to all classes, promotional rank testings, and tournaments. Each dobok has on the right breast an ATA shield patch with a school or club-specific patch on the left. On the back of the uniform, instructors and trainee instructors are required to have the word "TAEKWONDO" arching over a red and blue ATA patch. Underneath the patch is the instructor's name, either as "JOHN DOE" or "J. DOE." Non-instructor students may wear a uniform with "TAEKWONDO" and an ATA patch on the back, however, these students do not wear their names on their backs. Instead of a name, the student will have the location of the dojahng (dojo) he or she attends, e.g., "Norman, Oklahoma." [4]

ATA Patch

ATA patch ATA students wear a patch on the right breast that is in the shape of a shield. At the top-left of the patch is the American Flag. The flag of South Korea is next to it in the top-right corner. The lower two-thirds of the patch is a white field with a large "ATA," the consonant in blue and the vowels in red, tapering away from the center. The stitching around the flags and the whole of the patch is blue.

The ATA patch worn on the back of the uniform is made up of large block letters with the same color pattern as on the breast patch. The rear patch has a white silhouette of a jump side kick superimposed on it.[

Black Belt Club patch

Black Belt Club patch or Master Club patch The Black Belt Club (BBC) or Master Club (MC) patch is worn on the top of the left sleeve. The BBC patch is in the shape of an inverted triangle over top of a circle. The MC patch is in the shape of a circle with the Songahm star stitched into the center. These patches are worn by all members of the respective club. The BBC and MC are where students may learn additional material as communicated by their instructor for additional fees.
[18]

ATA Leadership Program patch

Leadership Program patch The Leadership Program Club patch is worn on the top of both sleeves. This patch is worn by all members of the Leadership Program. The Leadership Program is where students learn advanced training material and leadership/instructing skills for additional fees.[
citation needed]

Instructor collars Black Belt students not certified as instructors nor enrolled in a trainee instructor program may wear a one inch black ribbon along the edge of the uniform jacket from the bottom of the jacket to the level of the belt. Instructors wear a ribbon on the entire length of the collar with one half inch of white showing on the top/inside of the collar.

Leadership students wear a 1" Red Ribbon and are eligible to work toward instructor certification. The Certified Trainer wears a red/black collar denoting the first rank in the instructor program. The Specialty Certified Instructor wears a black/red/black collar as the second rank toward full instructor certification. The Certified Instructor collar ribbon is solid black.

ATA School Owners may have additional collars denoting the number of students under their instruction. A Blue Center Stripe (1 ½" black with ¼" blue center stripe) denotes a School Owner with over 200 active students at a every testing cycle. Silver Center Stripe (1 ½" black with ¼" silver center stripe) is for a studio owner that has 500 active students at every testing and a Gold Center Stripe (1 ½" black with ¼" gold center stripe) is for a studio owner that has 1,000 active students at every testing.

The Solid Gold 1 ½" stripe is reserved for the Grand Master.

In addition, a 1 inch black stripe is added down the sides of the pant legs after a student or instructor has reached 4th degree Black Belt. Any individual attaining 4th degree Black Belt wears this pant leg stripe regardless of instructor level or school ownership.[18]

Instructor dress uniform At promotional testings and ATA tournaments, Level 3 Certified Instructors have the option to wear navy blue suits in lieu of their doboks. Fifth Degree Black Belts and up wear matching blue pants, while 1st through 4th degrees wear grey pants. A special ATA patch is worn on the instructor's left breast. The patch is navy blue with all stitching being done in silver for 1st-4th Degrees or gold for 5th and up. Underneath the shield on the patch is a silver or gold banner (as appropriate) with the instructor's title and name stitched in navy blue.

Songahm Taekwondo Federation The Songahm Taekwondo Federation is a branch of ATA established for South America. It was founded in 1984 by H.U. Lee and Cesar Ozuna. This was the first international chapter for the Songham style of taekwondo outside of the US.[citation needed]

World Traditional Taekwondo Union Founded during the fall of 1990, The World Traditional Taekwondo Union (WTTU) is a division of Songahm Taekwondo. While the ATA consists of taekwondo schools in the United States and the STF consists of schools in South America, the WTTU covers the remainder of the world.[citation needed]

ATA-Xtreme (Xtreme Martial Arts) ATA-Xtreme is a hybrid of traditional taekwondo open-hand and weapons forms and may contain acrobatics, and gymnastics, however it is based on the traditional moves of taekwondo. The goal of its participants is to impress both the audience and the judges with their skill and choreography. Common moves include the butterfly roundkick, backflip, 540 Crescent kick, double jump front kick, L-kick, and Kip-up.[citation needed]

Korean Taekwondo Council The Korean branch of the ATA.[citation needed]

Songahm Grand Masters Within the Songahm system of taekwondo, there is at most one 9th Degree Black Belt within the organization at a time. This individual holds the title of Grand Master and is considered to be the leader of Songahm Taekwondo. Past and present Grand Masters include:

Master's Council Upon being diagnosed with cancer in 2000, H.U. Lee decided the creation of a council for the governorship of his organization was necessary. In September 2000, Lee formally created the Songahm Master's Council composed of some of his advisers. The first members of the Master's Council included:

  • Soon Ho Lee (then 8th Degree/Chief Master, now 9th Degree Black Belt)
  • Robert Allemier (8th Degree Black Belt)
  • In Ho Lee (8th Degree Black Belt)
  • William Clark (8th Degree Black Belt)
  • G.K. Lee (8th Degree Black Belt)
  • M.K. Lee (8th Degree Black Belt)
After being unanimously confirmed by the Master's Council as the next Grand Master Candidate, Soon Ho Lee removed himself from the Master's Council to focus on his training to become Songahm's second Grand Master. H.U. Lee holds an honorary position in the Master's Council.

When I moved to this region and opened a school for the first time, I was unsure how to run a successful school. I was also apprehensive about how to continue my own training, since I was 800 miles from my own Senior Master. It was very reassuring to discover that Senior Master Thomas was just down the road from me.

I met Senior Master Thomas in Florida in the late 1990s when I was training to be an ATA instructor. As one of the highest ranks at that training camp (he was then a 5th degree black belt), I was surprised that Master Thomas remembered me years later (I was one of the lowest rank attendees). In 2003, Sr. Master Thomas welcomed me as an instructor to Region 111. Even though I came from a different region, had a different master, and only ran a small school as a part-time venture, Sr. Master Thomas invited me to serve on testing panels, attend training sessions, ensured I was included in communications concerning school owners, and personally worked to prepare me for rank testing. This support proved crucial in ensuring the continued successful operation of my school.

Having Senior Master Thomas and his supportive staff so close by has been very beneficial to me as a martial artist and instructor. Having him as one of the growing number of quality senior masters in our region speaks volumes about the high standards of leadership present in Region 111.

ATA is a life changing experience. The quest to Black Belt is not easy, by any means, but it is fun. The students leave class tired - but smiling - every time, and they learn far more than the art and execution of TaeKwonDo. Self esteem, self control, concentration

and commitment all mature exponentially as the student progresses up the ranks. A unique aspect of the ATA experience is that the students never make the journey alone. The lines blur between students, staff and family as all grow together toward the common goal. Master Thomas is far more than a Master Martial Artist. The Master also is a counselor, a confidant and a friend to each and every member of his ATA family, and the sense of belonging touches everyone. Come join us. You'll be glad you did

I have had the opportunity to work with Senior Master and Mrs. Thomas throughout the past five years. During this time, I have watched Changing Lives Martial Arts grow into the leading martial arts academy in Hampton Roads.

Senior Master Thomas and his staff are continually changing to enhance the instruction and overall martial arts experience for their students. I am honored to have been a part in showing the community that Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts is not just another activity but a way of life for many families.

I would personally recommend for everyone to try a class at any of his four Hampton Roads locations. I look forward to working with you and your staff again in the future!

During my ten years as a martial artist, instructor, and school owner, I have yet to meet a group of martial arts instructors as knowledgeable and professional as the Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts staff. Senior Master Thomas is not just an expert martial artist, he is an outstand instructor and leader as well.  He has carefully chosen and developed a remarkable set of instructors I am proud to call colleagues.  If your goal for yourself or your children is to grow and achieve success as a total person -- physically, mentally, and spiritually -- you need to be training at Changing Lives.

When I started my martial arts school, I had a lot of enthusiasm, but no real idea of how to make a school successful.

That changed when I joined the Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts family.  Thanks to Senior Master Thomas' guidance and expertise, I have seen my school grow and be successful in ways I never dreamed possible.  Thank you, Senior Master, for helping me and my students set and achieve ever more ambitious goals.

Songham Taekwondo training has been rewarding for Skyler and Makayla. ATA's values of discipline and respect has an obvious impact in their childhood development. They display more respect to others and enjoy their accomplishments.

We are very grateful for the challenges of Songham forms, sparring, and weapons training their instructor have helped them to overcome. Thank-you to all their instructors for their commitment towards all students..

"ATA has had a powerful, positive impact on Jacob's life. During his two years of training, he has become more self-confident and focused. ATA reinforces life skills which we, as parents, know are vital to achieving success in adulthood: leadership,

goal setting, perseverance, positive attitude, and respect for self and others. We are proud to be part of the ATA family!" ~Erin and Pete H.

The leadership/instructor camp with Master Thomas was an awesome experience and great opportunity to learn from one of the best. I would most definitely recommend it to others passionate for taekwondo. I enjoyed getting to interact with the other enthusiastic

and motivated individuals from the various academies. Both the instructors' and students' dedication to taekwondo and all its aspects, from learning and studying it, to mentoring and teaching others through the leadership and instructor programs, was and is really a great sight to see and be part of. The camp allowed me to improve my forms, board breaks, and sparring through proper technique, focus, and practice. However, even more important to me was how it enhanced my confidence in my own personal abilities and in being a leader in the dojahng. I look forward to the future with ATA..

We have been associated with ATA since 2004, it has been an uplifting and most memorable experience to say the least. It has taught my son respect, self-esteem, discipline and perseverance. ATA has provided an opportunity for my son to excel in all facets of martial arts. The intensity and dedication by all instructors is above reproach. The dynamic attribute that ATA offers is a diverse, tailored training regiment for all experience levels.

The instructors continually identify student deficiencies and reinforce by the "positive" attitude approach to teaching. Additionally, "private" sessions have been invaluable to my son's development. Although instructors are available, the student itself must train outside of their class. ATA affords parents to make choices for their children to enter a multitude of programs ranging from Leadership to Expert. The added benefit is for parents having the ability to observe their child's' progression to determine, with instructor consultation, if their child is ready for more challenges. ATA offers students the ability to rapidly advance to a next higher rank (belt or instructor level) through an intensive testing program designed to extract talents and abilities that a student may never have realized they had. Although intense, only after successful completion of this "boot camp", may they be advanced after a rigorous evaluation process.

ATA also has the diversity of allowing striving competitor's to compete outside the local area. Competition tournaments, as well as tournament training are integral part of ATA's development cycle as to provide an active competitor the skills and ring knowledge required to be successful. Following each competition, the instructors actively engage competitors to assist with faults that were established during an event, and acknowledge their accomplishments during class.

ATA is a "community" where people of all nationalities come together and be-friend one another. The biggest asset to this is the help attitude for the new person which may lead to becoming and traveling companion. Some friendships have evolved immensely outside of ATA. ATA, although a business, is a family oriented establishment teaching the youngest participant lifelong ideals and instilling confidence to all who are actively involved.

On behalf of the Great Bridge Primary School, I would like to thank you for your contribution to our Family, Fun, and Fitness Night. Our students and parents enjoyed the evening and your enthusiasm at your designated area was extremely appreciated.

Your participation enabled the event to be successful once again and helped to promote health and fitness throughout the school and community.  The Great Bridge Primary physical education department, PTA, school nurse, and wellness committee sponsored this event. We were fortunate to be joined by incredible volunteers such as you. We recognize that without the hard work and dedication of these volunteers that this event would not be possible. We are greatly appreciative of your time and energy in support of our Family Fun and Fitness Night!

rom a parents perspective the lessons our daughter has received from ATA in these few short months are simply discipline, self defense and respect. Not necessarily in that order. But they are all wrapped in together. Initially, we the parents, wanted our daughter to learn discipline.  She already receives that at home, but we also have a great respect for the discipline that others can instill as well, and in ATA we've found what we were looking for.  In addition to discipline, she has gained respect, not the respect for the parents, its more, it's the respect for the instructors, the uniform, the class, and most importantly, others around her. Finally, what price can one put on their child's safety and well being? It has been wonderful to watch as our daughter is instructed in the manner of how to identify a stranger; more importantly what to do should one try to put hands on or harm our child.

Through our training, our daughter has grown wiser and stronger. She's receiving the life skills that we want her to have. ATA is reinforcing what she is learning at home in regards to discipline and respect, and amplifying in areas that they specialize in with the martial arts.

I want to tell you how much ATA has meant to our family. Having a young man with Down Syndrome has been a challenge for us. His weight, coordination, and self confidence was all in need of help. I had checked out several options
for him to help with these problems and was very happy with what I saw at your Greenbrier location. I was so impressed I not only signed up my step-son, but my grandson as well. Justin and Brad have blossomed while there. Justin has improved his balance and self confidence and wants to be a black belt more than anything. Mrs. Morin, Mr. Powell, and Mr. Tucker have been patient, caring, and compassionate with him and everyone in Justin's family has been impressed with the other students and instructors as well. They have helped him so much that a lot of time during class I will get teary eyed. They all know how much his improvements mean to me.

I recommend the school to everyone I meet and tell them how great everyone is to Justin and after dealing with the people who are not kind to disabled adults, finding this school are a godsend. Thanks so much for teaching the respect and consideration that the instructors have and that they pass on to all the students.

I first became interested in krav maga after seeing something on TV. So I became curious and searched for places that taught it on the internet and came across the ATA. I called and was told I was welcome to come in and try a class for free to see if it was for me. So I agreed and went in not knowing what to expect. I had read that the workouts were intense but nothing I had read prepared me for what I was about to experience. Now I played football all throughout high school and college and have lifted more weights, ran more wind sprints, and had more 2 a day practices than I would like to remember. .I honestly didn’t think that a martial arts class would be as physically taxing as anything I had experienced in the past.

About 10 minutes into the class, I realized just how wrong I had been. From the moment we stepped on the floor for the warm-up, we were going full tilt. It started with 3 rounds of punching a bag for a minute followed by a one minute round of pushups. Then it was on to kicks and sit-ups. I was gassed in 20 minutes. Luckily that’s about the time when our instructor began to show us choke defense techniques. I was really impressed the simplicity of the techniques and how they can be effective for a person of any size or physical stature. Also the mentality that was being really impressed me as well. The instructors teach to avoid conflict and confrontation at all costs, however if you are attacked or forced to defend yourself, you cannot hesitate or have any self-doubt about what you must do to survive.

I was immediately hooked. Not only was this the most challenging workout I have ever come across, but I was learning techniques to defend myself in real-life situations, and learning multiple ways to handle myself based on the situation and the level of escalation. I can honestly say that krav maga and the ATA have positively changed my life. I have lost nearly 30lbs doing krav as well as I have more confidence than ever, that in any adverse situation, I WILL overcome and prevail. I have also more discipline and leadership than I thought I could imagine. I am now a school teacher and I had to relocate and leave the ATA to pursue my career in education. However I am planning on continuing my own education in krav maga and perhaps other forms of martial arts. I have set a goal for myself to be a certified instructor of krav maga one day. I am extremely grateful to the ATA and Senior Master Thomas for making this a part of my life. I would highly recommend krav maga and the ATA to ANYONE looking to boost their confidence, become mentally strong enough to handle any situation, or just to get in better shape. They will help you reach whatever goals you have set for yourself as they have helped me.

Sincerely,
Jared Brice

When our son, Robbie, first stated taking classes at the Princes Anne Academy we knew that this was what we wanted him to do.  Shortly after he started our other son decided that he would also like to take classes.   At that time we started as a family and soon after went into the instructor program, this was something that we wanted to do not only for our future but for others.  As we grew in our abilities we began to see what a change that was occurring within ourselves and the other students that we knew.

The changes that we have seen in the students with Senior Master Thomas are a fantastic accomplishment.  From seeing parents have to stand on the floor with the kids the first few classes to seeing them grow to where they are in front of the classes assisting the instructors.  The self-confidence that the students obtain along with the discipline is something that is amazing.

The instructors work with the students to insure that they are always learning and that they are not bored, that is an accomplishment in itself.   We are proud and honored that we have had the opportunity to be associated with Senior Master, he has Changed our Lives.

We enjoyed the Junior Leader ship Camp that was held in January. The amount of information and the instructions that Kai received was great. The encouragement from Master Thomas for Kai to try something different was nice to see. Kai told us that
he enjoyed himself (according to him his favorite part of camp was doing a running jump kick and lunch). It was a good learning experience for Kai, and as a bonus he made new friends along the way. Of course any time spent with Master Thomas is time well spent. We really appreciate how he broke things down in such a way that the kids could understand, and more importantly he made things fun for the kids. We are definitely looking forward to the next camp!

I would like to thank you for conducting the level up camp on January 24/25, 2009. It is clear that you are dedicated to passing on the values of the martial arts. This was the first camp my daughter attended and she was very pleased with the experience and excited to be able to learn to do things the right way. After putting in two days of hard work, she left the camp with an immeasurable amount of confidence and enthusiasm.

When I signed up both my boys, Jacob (10 years old) and Lucas (6 years old), for Taekwondo at ATA, I didn't really know what to expect from the program. Now 2 years later it's amazing to see the young men my boys have become. Strength, Balance,
Discipline, Respect, Self-Confidence, Self-Esteem and Dedication. I never thought that I would have used those terms with my boys, but now it's an everyday occurrence. To have my youngest Lucas open a door for an elderly priest, really makes a mother proud. Lucas has become a more independent, responsible young man. My oldest son Jacob, who battles adversity being an ADHD child, has thrived off of the structure that ATA delivers. He has so much more confidence now, and has become an integral young adult. While all these attributes are wonderful, ATA has also given me something. I am a military wife, and at ATA, I have found family. The instructors always welcome us with a smile and positive attitude, and as a mother, when it's been a difficult day; it means the world to me. To have the opportunity to engage in conversation and develop friendships, has been wonderful, to say the least. I feel blessed to know these friendships that have developed in the Do-Jang will continue outside their doors for years to come.

My son is a Black Belt candidate. We enrolled our son at ATA Princess Anne two years ago. He was a shy, strong willed and also a very unconfident child. He also had problems with self control and self discipline. After observing his first class with the instructor, I knew he could benefit from the program.  The question was would he commit to it himself? We asked him to set himself a goal, it was to make purple belt in one year. that would prove to us and himself his commitment. We have now surpassed that goal and my son is very proud to be considered a Black Belt candidate.  His involvement with taekwondo has helped bring so many wonderful opportunities and has helped our son evolve into such a different child. He is much more self controlled and has so much more confidence in himself. He ran for student council this past June at his elementary school and gave his speech in front of the whole student body. This was amazing to see in itself, but the really important part came when he lost. His 4th grade teacher pulled me aside to tell me how proud she was of our son. Not only because he ran for the office, but for the exemplary behavior after the results were announced to the school. She said that he got up and shook the winner's hand, a classmate, and then gave him a "big bear hug" and congratulated him. His teacher said that was the best display of good sportsmanship and self control she had ever seen.

Our son has never been very interested in sports or being a team player he always lacked the confidence and self discipline. However this year he joined a tackle football team and his team worked their way to the Virginia beach City playoffs. He was a new and very inexperienced player but the coach asked if he would please come back and play with him next year. That he was a great team player and an asset to the team.

Our son continues to astound us by getting involved in more activities. He was chosen for a lead role in his school drama club play, he is trying out for All-City chorus, and was handpicked to be a Safely patrol leader. He has been a Cub Scout for 6 years and will bridge this year to Boy Scouts. He is a straight A student and attends the Gifted School for Visual Arts. As his mom, I feel that Taekwondo has contributed in making all of these accomplishments and so many more possible. He has developed into a more confident, self controlled, respectful, and mature child. I am so proud of his commitment and him reaching his goal of Black Belt. I know he will wear this rank with pride!

Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas

Respect can only be earned.  There are two ways to earn respect.  You can work hard and gain rank or position in an organization gaining respect from your peers, or you can work hard to support and enhance your peers’ lives directly.

Senior Master Tracy Thomas does both.  In fact his road to success is paved by the success of others along the way.  Tracy Thomas does not need to wear his bright cobalt blue uniform to receive respect.  People quickly find that his bright optimistically positive attitude, clear vision, and humble confidence places any issue into perspective.  When we first came to this area, then 5th degree, Mr. Tracy Thomas came to visit our school.  He immediately put us at ease by showing as much respect for us as we had for him.  Rather than tell us how to improve our school, he treated us as equals sharing information and ways to improve both of our businesses. This is why Sr. Master Thomas breeds success.  He never feels he is beyond learning from even the least experienced person.  He knows that everyone has something to offer.  A lost opportunity for anyone is lost to everyone.  Nurturing and maturing his students, instructors, and peers is how he nurtures and matures himself.

Mrs. Kelly Thomas

Mrs. Kelly Thomas earns respect from ATA Instructors and students alike.  Not because of her husband’s rank, but because of the respect she shows others.  She is a magnificent supporter of the ATA, their family business Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts, and assisting in the goal of Changing Lives.  Her passion and positive attitude shows in every aspect of her life.  Her courtesy and caring nature is visible always.  As the saying goes, ‘Behind every successful man is a woman’.  I will have to add to this by saying, “Behind this successful man is a GREAT woman.”  Mrs. Thomas is truly a Great woman and the Thomas’ have success in their goal of Changing Lives because of their love for each other and their love for their business/students. Respectfully,

Sandy P (5th Degree) and Wayne P (4th Degree)
