Thank you for your inquiry into the ATA Martial Arts. Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts (CLMA) has a wide variety of martial arts programs serving our local community since 1991. The ATA has over 1,500 schools within the United States. Getting started is a simple process, you can call our martial arts headquarters at 757-471-9002 or email us your contact information and we will call to schedule your first free lesson. This way you can experience our programs before enrolling. Our professional staff is dedicated to the martial arts and the students and instructors.

Evaluation: Consultation and Orientation Changing Lives Martial Arts offers a free consultation and orientation introductory class for all new members. This way you can visit with us and see how our program fits you and your family’s needs. Please call 757-471-9002 and request an appointment at the nearest ATA Martial Arts school near you in Hampton Roads.

During your first meeting, one of our Program Directors will meet with you and your family to assess your training goals, explain our programs in detail, and answer any questions you may have in regards to you and your families training. CLMA schedules all new inquiries by appointment for a personal one on one consultation. If you would like to view a class without an appointment you are welcome to stop by and visit anyone of our academies.

ATA Martial Arts Trial Programs After visiting with the Changing Lives Martial Arts Team at the evaluation process, the next step would be to participate in a short-term trial program so you can "sample" our techniques and training methods. One of CLMA’s Martial Arts Program Directors will recommend the type and duration of your Changing Lives Martial Arts Trial Program based on your particular family schedule and needs. Most trial programs are one class to four weeks of classes in length and cost anywhere between $79.95 to $99.95.

Your First Lesson is a Private Lesson At Changing Lives Martial Arts we want to ensure a smooth and comfortable transition into the group class is managed appropriately, your first lesson will be a private one-on-one lesson with one of our CLMA Certified Chief Instructors. During your first lesson you and your family will be introduced to the etiquette, structure, and basic techniques used in class. Based on one's confidence, self esteem, aptitude and ability, the certified Instructor may recommend further private lessons - at no additional cost.

New Student Enrollment Options Upon completion of your ATA Martial Arts Trial Program, we will discuss with you the various course profiles and enrollment options that we offer at Changing Lives Martial Arts. Tuition rates may vary depending upon the program(s) selected and the number of family members enrolling at any one of our ATA Martial Arts Academies in Virginia Beach or Chesapeake, Virginia.

Student Evaluation During your first 4 weeks of training one of our Chief Instructors will schedule an evaluation with you to discuss your training, questions on techniques, and curriculum. During the evaluation, you will receive a copy of the specific goals the instructor has set for you as an individual training in our martial arts program.

Songahm Traditions Songahm Taekwondo was developed to further the traditional martial arts, but not remain stuck in the past. It focuses on developing courtesy, humility, justice, friendship and many other important attributes. This is woven into the system, pattern and philosophy of Taekwondo.

Taekwondo: "the martial art that trains people physically and mentally"

Although the roots of Taekwondo can be traced back to the third century A.D., the actual word "Taekwondo" was not adopted until 1955. Because of the Japanese occupation of Korea, the martial arts of Korea went underground and was taught only in secret. After Korea gained its independence, war General Hong Hi Choi began a movement to unify the styles of training into one body (based on the traditional name, (Taekyon). His purpose behind the name change was to make the art a Korean art. The names being used at the time were Tang-soo Do (the Chinese word for "empty hand"), Gong-soo Do (the Chinese word for "empty hand" used by the Japanese in the translation Karate-Do), and Soo-bak Do (based on the ancient Korean art of Soo-bak), dated to over 1300 years ago.

Since the words were primarily reflective of the Chinese and Japanese arts, and because the poome-sae (forms) used were of Chinese, Japanese and Okinawan descent, General Choi decided to use the ancient word of Taekwon as a root from which to develop the current name for the art, Taekwondo.

"Taekwondo" officially recognized"

General Choi presented the name "Taekwondo" to a committee specifically organized to choose a name for the national martial art. This committee voted unanimously to use the name and on April 11, 1955, the name was officially recognized by the government and Taekwondo became the national art of Korea. Taekwondo is made of three Chinese/Korean words: Tae, which means to kick or jump; Kwon, which means the fist or hand; and D, which means "the way" or the path as in a way of life. In 1968, General Choi had a meeting with then Master Haeng Ung Lee. Master Lee was, at the time, teaching the Pyeong Ahn forms (pre-Taekwondo, Japanese based forms) to his organization of followers. General Choi taught Master Lee the first 16 Cheon-jee forms (also known as Chahng-ohyn system) in only four days and three nights. This was possible because the simplicity of each form allowed them to be learned with little effort. This system of forms was the first set of forms developed under the new "Taekwondo" of Korea.

Songahm Taekwondo

Literally translated, Songahm means "pine tree and rock." Grand Master Lee chose the pine tree as the symbol of Taekwondo for two reasons: first, because of its place in the Korean culture as a symbol of unchanging human loyalty, longevity, respect, and happiness; second, because of the parallelism between the pine tree itself and the student of Taekwondo. It is also interesting to note that the pine tree is the state tree of Arkansas, the place in which the Songahm system was introduced.

A rock, the second symbol in the word Songahm, is representative of the traditional style of Songahm Taekwondo.

Although the art behind Taekwondo has been around for over 1300 years, it has been through various changes of names, philosophies, and techniques. This shows its longevity, such as the longevity of a rock that can retain its shape. The earth itself is a large rock with dirt around it. Underneath all the dirt is a massive rock that has existed for thousands of years. The rock is a symbol of unity and a solid foundation.

Taekwondo took on the attributes of many other styles of martial arts, losing its traditions and focusing more on the sport than the art. Grand Master Lee not only returned Taekwondo to its traditional values and its focus on the personal development of the student physically, mentally and emotionally, but he also developed the first set of forms that were truly Taekwondo forms based on Taekwondo techniques (previous styles of Taekwondo borrowed patterns and styles from Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan styles.) The rock is solid and represents ageless history. It was created many thousands of years ago and remains basically the same today. Over the years, various changes may take place to the rock on its surface due to the elements that it must face. However, the integrity of the rock remains the same. It is still solid and a sure foundation. The same is true for Songahm Taekwondo. It was developed many hundreds of years ago and its surface has changed, but the integrity, the inner part of the style, still remains the same.

Physical Elements of a Typical ATA Martial Arts Class Depending on the level of the class and the instructor’s preference or schedule, each class session may incorporate the following elements:

  • warm-up/stretching
  • stances (front stance, middle stance, ready stance, back stance, etc.)
  • basics (practicing blocks, strikes, kicks, and other basic moves up and down the floor)
  • forms (repeating form segments multiple times)
  • sparring (intense bouts)
  • one-steps (similar to mini-forms and sparring, with a partner)
  • self-defense techniques

Practicing with ATA Martial Arts Builds Muscle and Strength The different martial arts moves work various muscles throughout the body, providing a full body physical fitness workout for adults.

Martial Arts Stances - from front stance to middle stance or to a chimbe (ready stance) etc. - all strengthen leg muscles, extending endurance and balance.

Martial Arts Kicks - front kick, round kick, crescent kick, side kick, jump front kick etc. - works different core leg muscles, from hip to thigh to calf, and merely lifting each leg exercises it and helps tone the muscles.

Practicing Martial Arts Provides an Aerobic Workout and Helps Improve Cardio Fitness ATA Martial Arts classes also provides cardiovascular exercise through completing forms (poomse) and sparring (gyroogi).

Martial Arts Poomse's (forms) teach combinations of moves, simulating a “fight.” The discipline of practicing martial arts partially stem from learning forms at each belt level. Depending on the speed and number of forms to master, this repetition can provide a light, moderate, or vigorous aerobic workout.

Martial Arts Gyroogi's (sparring), which is a short intense fighting bout, as seen during mixed martial arts matches (MMA), can leave students breathless and muscles aching. Participating in a variety of sparring matches during a martial arts class gives students an intense cardio workout, while also demonstrating realistic uses of the basic moves learned in class.

Making Martial Arts a Part of an Exercise and Fitness Routine Incorporating martial arts into a physical fitness routine is a good way to get and stay healthy and to consistently work the overall body. 3 Popular Martial Art Techniques And How They Enhance Strength CHANGING LIVES MARTIAL ARTS

This article is about increasing your strength through three popular martial arts techniques. The techniques are punching and two different kinds of kicks.

Martial art

In my 30 years of teaching martial arts, I've found that people come to Changing Lives Martial Arts for a number of reasons. Some are attracted to martial arts because they want to learn to defend themselves. Others come because they want to tap into martial arts’ vast power as a tool for personal growth. Still others come merely because they are looking for a way to get in shape that's fun and spares them the tedious repetitiveness of the gym.

While martial arts can give a student all of these things, it is at its heart, a form of strenuous physical activity. The practice of any martial art can be an excellent means of becoming leaner, suppler, faster, more flexible and stronger.

Strength Equals Power

This rule holds true in any kind martial art technique. At our school, increasing strength is one of the things we focus on. Lifting weights is great but for a martial artist, it's not desirable to develop a bodybuilder's physique. Much of the strength training we do at our Virginia Beach and Chesapeake martial arts facility is inherent in the techniques itself.

Front Snap Kicks for Core Strength

All martial arts kicks utilize the muscle groups in the legs, however, many of the kicks we practice also call on core muscle groups like the abdominals and lower back muscles. Practicing Tae Kwon Do style front snap kicks with their high chambering of the knee is a particularly good way of increasing core strength in your abs, while simultaneously strengthening the muscles in your legs.

Punching Your Way to a Stronger Upper Body

When it comes to punches in martial arts, strength equals speed which equals power. I see the three as intertwined. So, while a certain amount of weight lifting may help to increase your punching power, similarly, throwing punches will help you develop better upper body strength. Working out on the heavy bag, hitting focus pads and other methods of practicing punches are all ways to enhance upper body strength through martial arts technique.

Side Kicks for Lower Body Strength

The side kick is one of the most immediate and devastating weapons in any martial artist's arsenal. Like a front snap kick, side kicks utilize core muscles to some degree. However, side kicks place a greater demand on the lower body than many other martial arts kicks. Practicing side kicks is an excellent way to build greater strength in your legs, hips, and thighs. The hard work you put into building this strength through practicing your kicks will pay dividends by translating as power when you unleash that side kick on a target.

There is a longstanding and deeply rooted misconception about the martial arts that I will address at the outset. It is not our goal, nor that of any responsible teachers of martial art, to teach our students to fight. We do instruct in the ways of self defense and that does include the ability to defend oneself, but the purpose of our school is more diverse and we believe, more important than that.

There are many of life’s important lessons to be learned from studying martial art. Most of them are rarely thought of in those terms because they are not skills that people associate with the martial arts. What they do not understand and one of the things we teach is that to be a student of martial arts, is to be a student of the art of self-knowledge. At Changing Lives Martial Arts, we instill in our students of all ages, the importance of respect and self-discipline. We have been helping to develop better citizens and better people here in the Virginia Beach area for 20 years. So, what can we offer you or your children that can help to refine social skills through the study of martial art? First and foremost is respect. No student of the martial arts can progress without an understanding of this essential attribute. It can be humbling the first time that a successful middle-aged executive must ask for direction from, or defer to a boy or girl who is younger than his own children are. Martial art instructs us that knowledge comes from those who possess it regardless of age or any other consideration. We learn from those who know more than we do and respect them for their knowledge.

Martial art teaches self-esteem and self-confidence. By learning to control our emotions and to think before we act, we become more skilled at allowing others to participate in our lives. We lose the need to prove ourselves because we learn to feel secure and comfortable with whom we are. What our students accomplish as they achieve this creates confidence in their abilities to overcome difficulties. Our martial arts students become better listeners and partners.

Martial art teaches courtesy, another essential life skill. Higher ranking students and instructors are afforded the regard that their knowledge demands. New students and lower ranks deserve support and help. We all started at the beginning and we remember how much that courtesy meant to us in the beginning.

How to choose the right Martial Arts School”.

In the martial arts business, not all schools are created equal. Martial Arts instructors generally do not have to answer to a state agency; or even have specific training. Some schools; such as, ones belonging to the American Taekwondo Association require all instructors to become certified prior to owning or operating a martial arts school. ATA Instructors are required to be a certified Instructor and must keep their National certifications and qualifications up to date.

Certifications such as the following are a few of the ones required by ATA Martial Arts:
• CPR
• State and Federal background check
• Class management skills certification
• Physical skills certification
• ATA Certification Camp
• Child Safety Skills and Drills
• Kidz-N-Power Course

Senior Master Tracy Thomas suggests you do your research prior to enrolling at a school. Seeing what the school has to offer will give parents and potential students a better understanding of the commitment and guide you in making your decision for the right martial arts academy.

Below are some key steps, questions to ask and tips when choosing a Martial Arts School:

1. Research on the internet. Read Martial Art Articles, stories, testimonials, and learn as much as you can about your local Martial Arts schools.

2. Make an appointment. The school should offer a free introductory class, take it and experience the class, academy and instructors. This should be a positive experience with class structure and a personal rapport with you and your family.

3. Overall positive attitude of the instructor and the students. This can serve as an accurate indicator of school spirit. Respect goes both ways, you should see both the instructor and students showing it at all times.

4. Does the class have structure and self control? A martial arts class should include a warm up, specific training material and cool down. Many schools encourage the students to arrive early to their martial arts class so they can stretch before the class to prevent injuries.

5. Martial Arts Location. The school’s proximity to your home or work should seriously be taken into consideration prior to enrolling into a program.

6. Equipment/Facility. Martial arts schools vary in the type of equipment and amenities they offer. Does the school appear clean? Are the martial arts students required to wear safety gear?

7. Class Sizes and Schedule. Many new students prefer to be part of a larger class, rather than a small class; however, the benefits of a smaller class should not be overlooked. You will also want to ask when classes are offered, how long are the classes, and can your class schedule be flexible if needed?

8. Quality of Martial Arts Instruction. Is the instructor certified? What rank do they hold? How long have they been in martial arts? Who is their senior instructor and how often do they train with him/her? Are they certified by a National Martial Arts Organization?

9. Class Ages/Groups. What age can my child start? Are the classes separated by age and/or belt level? Are you looking for a family class?

10. Ranking. How often do you test for rank? What are the requirements? Is my rank nationally recognized? Can I transfer out of the area to another academy with the same Martial Arts style and curriculum?

11. Price of Instruction. Prices vary depending on the program. Ask about paid in full options, many times this will not only save you money, but it will also include free gear or a considerable discount. Be sure to ask questions, the instructor should be receptive to your questions and answer in a clear matter. Is everything discussed, well documented within the membership agreement?

Choosing the right Karate School is not just about location. In the KARATE business, not all schools are created equal. We train our students to the best of their ability. Some students come to us in shape, while other have come to us 100 pounds over weight. Most come to us with limited flexibility.

Martial Arts For Teens & Adults... Adults start at any age, as we have had some adults who started as late as age 65, and have still earned their black belts. As a student, you are looked upon as an individual, never compared to anyone else. Our instructors will be there every step of the way. All that is expected of you is a willingness to try. Here are some benefits you can expect from training in Taekwondo.

Fitness The principals of Taekwondo techniques are based on the design of your body. For power you develop the larger, powerful muscles of the torso. The speed of the techniques comes from the fast, agile muscles of the arms and legs. As you progress in Taekwondo you will learn to coordinate this speed and power, and develop a concentration to focus all of your body's strength into a small, hard striking surface like the edge of the hand or the heel of the foot.

Self Defense When the speed and power developed through Taekwondo is used in a self defense situation against the soft vulnerable parts of an attacker's body, the result can be incredible. Taekwondo allows a woman to emphasize many of her natural physical strengths, such as power in the legs, while learning a method of self-defense efficient against a much larger opponent. Knowing you can defend yourself, your confidence will grow. And confidence alone is usually enough to deter potential attackers.

Self Confidence This does not come naturally for many people, but self confidence can be developed over a period of time. Through Taekwondo, as you accomplish new goals, your confidence level increases. Taekwondo instills a sense of discipline and self confidence that can carry over to all aspects of your life.

Sexual Assault Awareness Training.  In recognition of this, Krav Maga Official Training Centers in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia are offering FREE rape prevention seminars for women as a service to the community. A FREE 3 DAY COURSE is available for all females from ages 15 yrs and up until December 1st, 2009. All course are free and will be held at one of the Changing Lives Martial Arts facilities.


Nationally certified self-defense instructors and defensive tactics experts will be available to answer questions and give advice to the general public on how to prevent and survive a violent encounter!
Krav Maga (krahv muh-GAH) is the official self-defense system for the men and women of the Israeli Defense Forces, and is required training for scores of law enforcement agencies in the United States. Krav Maga is recognized as the most efficient self defense system for real-life situations, emphasizing practical defenses against real attacks. The system is now embraced by thousands of civilians nationwide and many celebrities on the screens in Hollywood.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice more than 2.5 million women experience violence annually. Statistics also show that every 90 seconds a woman is raped in America.

Hampton Roads needs community involvement and support.  We all have to work together to raise awareness and promote strong, alert, confident and healthy attitudes and behaviors to end America’s sexual assault epidemic.  This program will help prepare young ladies for college, women traveling to work, and any female wanting to learn “SAFETY AWARENSS” . The Krav Maga Training Center will make this training available to all women in the community who wish to possess the skills needed to prevent or survive a violent assault.

Master Instructor, Senior Master Thomas, a nationally recognized Krav Maga Worldwide Instructor will be conducting this empowering course. As a seventh degree black belt with over 30 years of experience teaching martial arts, I have students come to me for a number of reasons. Women's self defense is one of the most practical aspects of the instruction we provide at our Virginia Beach area martial arts academies.

A stiletto heel, once removed, can be wielded as a dangerous weapon for striking the face, neck or groin. Knees can be brought up to strike a groin and elbows can be jabbed into the face or neck.

Soft Targets and Women's Self Defense

Another important women's self defense technique is to look for the soft target. Typically, men are stronger than women are; so if you are attacked, you want to hit your assailant hard once and get away. Eyes, nose, throat, groin and solar plexus are all soft targets that are vulnerable to finger jabs and elbow or knee strikes. The instep of the foot is sensitive and contains many nerve endings. If you are grabbed from behind, a good women's self defense technique is to pick up your foot and drive your high heel into your assailant’s foot.

Krav Maga is a reality-based hand-to-hand combat system that was developed by the Israeli military. Many martial arts are known for their ceremony, pageantry, and elegant forms. Krav Maga is not one of them. What Krav Maga is known for is being simple, direct and highly effective in real world combat situations.

I am a seventh degree black belt who has been training people in the martial arts in the Virginia Beach area for 20 years now. I've studied a wide variety of different martial arts in my life and I consider Krav Maga to be by far the most practical and effective of them all.

At Changing Lives Martial Arts, the object of our Krav Maga training program is to create situations that are as realistic as possible without causing injury to our students. To acquire the skill necessary to handle an assailant in a violent confrontation or an enemy in battle, training is required. Training in a fighting method means dealing physically (from light to full contact) and mentally with one or more partners. Training may also consist of utilizing a punching bag, focus mitts, other training pads or contact suits - to build one's skills. Techniques can be improved and refined by performing them "dry," i.e., without the interaction of a partner or the resistance of a punching bag... in essence, by physically performing them "to the air." Our objective is for the student to participate in all types of training without getting hurt.

Advanced Training

Protech Training Systems... Under the direction of Senior Master Thomas, provides advanced martial arts training for instructors. Programs are used by instructors to improve their personal skills, as well as for enhancement to their school programs.

Ssahng Jeol Bong (Nunchucku) This course was developed primarily for all of our "Karate for Kids", but many of the adult students have shown an interest as well. It gives students a solid foundation in the basics of the Ssahng Jeol Bong and helps them understand how this exciting weapon works. The material taught in this course is taken from several different backgrounds, pulling the best and the most effective techniques from each. As with other weapons, the benefits include improved upper body development, better hand-eye coordination, increased concentration, and a great deal of fun. We are sure you will find this course to be both challenging and extremely enjoyable.

Single Stick, Double Stick, & Disarming This course highlights the most popular techniques of the Filipino stick fighting systems, as well as incorporates aspects of Japanese, Chinese and Korean martial arts. The stick course gives students the basics for training in just about any weapons system. It also helps develop hand-eye coordination and is great physical exercise.

Jahng Bong (Long Staff) This course offers one of the most effective long range weapons used in early Korea. It is a combination of Chinese, Korean and Japanese techniques which allows us to use the best of each style. Besides learning this beautiful weapon, the benefits include increased self-defense skills and tremendous upper body strength, as well as improved concentration, coordination, focus and self confidence.

Protech Training Systems Certification Programs SELF DEFENSE TRAINING Joint Manipulation & Throwing Techniques This course combines joint manipulation, Hapkido & Aikido techniques. It is perfect for the student who would like to learn techniques like Steven Segal uses. We also feel this program will be of interest to all students trying to broaden their own personal training and knowledge.

Ground Fighting A good martial artist can fight standing up or from the ground. Many self-defense situations end up on the ground where the kicking and punching of Taekwondo are not always effective. Learn the techniques that can help you win the battle on the ground.

Street Self Defense This course teaches you the most effective blocking and striking techniques for defense on the street. Based on Muay Thai Boxing techniques, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to defend themselves on the street.

Spontaneous Knife Defense This course is taken primarily from the Filipino knife system and offers an inside look at how people use knives, as well as the most effective way to live through a knife attack. It will also cover knife training, knife stances, analysis of knife cuts and cutting targets.

P.P.C.T. (Pressure Point Control Tactics) This course is the original course offered by Protech Training Systems used primarily for work in conjunction with local law enforcement. It includes the secrets of "one touch knockout points" and "principles of control." This program has been legally, medically and tactically researched to put it on the forefront of control tactics. It is currently used by many secret agencies and law enforcement agencies.

S.H.A.R.P. (Sexual Harassment Assault ~ Rape Prevention) The S.H.A.R.P. course includes three sections including: prevention and psychology, professional and social harassment and assault countermeasures. This is great self defense for women in the workplace.

Thanks to a fast food/soda pop diet and the attractions of the TV, childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions.

"It's not unusual to see a 12-year-old weighing 250 pounds," says Christiane Wert, M.P.H., R.D., program director for KidShape, a Los Angeles weight management program for children.

Overweight kids are targets for other kids' barbs, which can leave emotional scars, but there are more immediate physical concerns -- high blood pressure, cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease. Excessive weight also exacerbates asthma, contributes to orthopedic problems like hip displacement and knee fractures, and may lead to early menstruation in pre-teen girls, a risk factor for breast cancer.

The problems are all preventable, Wert says, if children slim down by eating nutritious food and getting more physically active. It's not just a matter of cutting calories, which tends to deplete muscle mass along with fat; this kind of "dieting" not only weakens children, but ultimately slows down fat metabolism.

In contrast, exercise boosts metabolism on a 24-hour basis. When kids are regularly active, their bodies burn more calories even when they're sitting around watching Xena.

Here are some of Wert's ideas for enticing even the most sedentary kids to get physical:

  • Make exercise fun. "Think of activities that kids enjoy and that they'll succeed at," advises Wert. "If you pick an activity that's too difficult for them to master, they'll feel like failures and won't want to keep doing it." Ice skating, inline skating, or skiing, for example, may be great for some, but too complex for others. Consider snowshoeing, a bike ride, a martial arts class, or even something as simple as a hike through the park or a brisk walk at your favorite shopping center. Better yet: Ask your kids what they might like to try.
  • The family that plays together... Parents (and siblings) should get on board with the new exercise program. The more family members who get enthusiastically involved the better. "If parents see exercise as a chore, kids will sense that and won't want to do it," notes Wert. Instead, form Team Family so that the child doesn't feel singled out or punished for being overweight. When was the last time you did something fun and active with your children?
  • Reward effort. Set up a point system for exercise. For instance, keep track of everyone's exercise feats with a chart on the refrigerator. Don't make it a competition, but reward the whole group's accomplishment. When everyone has done three exercise activities a week, say, celebrate by doing something special
  • But never use high-calorie sweets or fatty foods as a reward, Wert cautions; it sends the wrong message. "Food is something to nourish the body, not a reward or punishment," she states firmly: "If at the end of a week of healthful eating, you reward your child with an ice cream sundae, it will seem more desirable than the healthful food. The child may become consumed thinking about it."
  • Instead of food, try tickets to a sporting event, the theater, a concert or the movies. Girls might like a massage or facial at a day spa. Or splurge on athletic equipment like skates, mountain bikes, a gym membership, even something as simple as a jump rope or wacky exercise video.
  • Circuit-train at home. Who needs a fancy home gym when you've got stairs, living room furniture and canned goods? Using everyday items as exercise tools makes for creative fun. Wert suggests establishing workout stations throughout the house for specific exercises. Do as much as you can at one spot in two or three minutes, then move on to the next station.
  • Jog five or six times up and down the stairs in the allotted time, move on to crunches with your legs up on the couch, then hustle to the kitchen to curl two 10-oz. cans of tomatoes or water bottles. Finish the routine by jumping rope on the porch. Do the circuit several times. Make it more fun by blasting your kids' favorite music.
  • Dance! Turn your living room into a disco. Pump up the volume, and shake it. Sure, it's high on the corniness meter, but it can also be a lot of goofy fun.
  • Play schoolyard games. Tag, touch football and capture the flag are aerobic outdoor games that everyone can play. Invite other families on your block to join in, and it becomes a big social event -- not like exercise at all. When they're having fun, kids barely notice the huffing and puffing.
  • When the weather is nasty, a great indoor option is crab soccer. Get down crab-like, scuttling on your hands and feet to move a soft Nerf ball from one end of the family or rumpus room to the other. Just be sure to clear away anything breakable before you start.

Too Tired to Exercise? Are you making excuses to avoid exercise and say you feel too tired to work out any more? You know it is good for you and you always feel better after, but the “do it anyway” motto isn’t cutting it any more. If it isn’t due to a physical illness or low-iron level, then here are a few pointers to try to motivate yourself to keep going.

Change your schedule. If you usually exercise in the evening, set your alarm thirty minutes early and get your exercise session out of the way before your day begins. An early morning exercise session will help energize and motivate you for the rest of the day. Plus, you can look forward to a relaxing evening knowing you've accomplished your goal. This can be a simple solution to the problem of being too tired to work out..

Sometimes the best cure for sluggishness or fatigue is a vigorous exercise session. Have you ever noticed how you can walk into your martial arts class (Tae Kwon Do, Krav Maga, Karate) exhausted, but after thirty minutes, you feel energized and invigorated? Exercise gets your blood flowing and zaps fatigue. Classes are designed to be both mentally and physically challenging. If you need motivation to lure yourself to class, promise yourself a small reward after you finish, like a long, relaxing bath or 20 minutes with your favorite book; just make sure it's not a hot fudge sundae!

If it is only occasionally that you find yourself too tired to work out, go ahead and work out, but less vigorously. To help you to take the first step, tell yourself you'll only exercise for ten minutes. Chances are you won’t notice when the ten minutes have passed; you'll feel so invigorated that you'll want to keep going. You can always change your routine temporarily to get rid of the boredom by substituting something fun. Go outside for a brisk walk. Shoot hoops in the driveway. Ride your bike to the local store. You can get back on schedule the next time you exercise and the variety will be good for you both physically and mentally. If you still find yourself “too tired,” talk to your instructor about ways to exercise outside of class that will also benefit your martial arts skills. Give these tips a try and soon you'll no longer need the old excuse of being too tired to work out. Plus, you'll look and feel like a new person.

Healthy Snack Tips There are many different diets out there, but they don’t always fit a person’s lifestyle, not to mention, not everyone needs a diet, just healthier eating habits to fit their lifestyle. Emotional eaters know they need to keep their trigger foods like chips, ice cream, cookies and candy out of the house. Stock healthier snacks like fruits, air-popped popcorn, pretzels, crunchy vegetables with low-fat dips or nuts. For those times when you know you will be busy, bag your snacks in individual baggies or containers as soon as you get them home, so you can grab and go without devouring the entire bag. If you absolutely feel the need for a treat, purchase a small or individual serving of your favorite treat and enjoy it.

Snacking in front of the television is another habit that isn’t easy on the fat or calories. If you find you can’t give up snacking while watching your shows, keep low-calorie foods on hand. We all know how easy it is to eat too much when you are mesmerized by your favorite drama, game or cooking show. Eat crisp, raw vegetables instead of greasy chips. Do you feel like you can't live without chocolate? If there are foods you won't give up, enjoy them in smaller amounts. Buy one tiny, high-quality piece of candy and enjoy it. If it only comes in one size, leave the rest in the break room at work; it won’t be there long enough to tempt you. Limit other favorite treats or foods that aren't healthy by enjoying them only once or twice a month and make a big production of savoring your treat. Don’t scarf it down while driving home; sit alone in a quiet, peaceful area and savor each small bite.

You won’t transform your unhealthy diet overnight, so don't despair. Most people can't. Implement one idea at a time and every change you make will be one step in the right direction. Remember the saying; “A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins With One Step”. Make that step today, small or large a step in the right direction is a step to living longer and a healthier live style.

Before one can practice self-discipline; they need to be able to define it. The definition of self-discipline is: the act of disciplining or power to discipline one's own feelings, desires, etc., especially with the intention of improving oneself.

Practice makes perfect. Self discipline is definitely something that you can teach yourself with practice. It's only by getting up and getting your hands wet that you can start to incorporate discipline within yourself; only then can you truly experience the ups and downs that it takes to become truly self-disciplined. “Strong self discipline and the desire to stay on target is what helps us get back up when we fall on our path”. Get rid of bad habits. Whatever they might be, try to rid your life of habits that can hinder your discipline. In many situations, the only disability one has is a poor attitude.

You’ve tightened your abs, stretched your hamstrings and built your biceps, but have you exercised to build your mental stamina? Exercise helps your body resist stress-related disorders. The brain sends signals to the body to produce adrenaline during stressful situations, but it’s meant to be for short periods of time, not long-term. Long-term exposure to adrenaline causes many physical problems, and can contribute to headaches, digestive problems, colds, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stomach fat!

According to Barbara Brehm-Curtis, EdD, professor of exercise and sport studies at Smith College in Northampton, MA, "If done consistently, physical activity actually reduces your stress reactivity. That means less adrenaline gets released and you don't get as stressed out by things that used to upset you."

There are some things you can do to facilitate the stress resistance factors. Choose physical activities, like martial arts, that allow you to have fun! This alters the brain chemistry in a positive way, reducing stress. Playing vigorously has the added benefit of ridding your body of stress-causing hormones such as adrenaline.

Strength training, yoga or any exercise, which involves tensing then releasing muscles, can act as progressive relaxation. As Dr. Brehm-Curtis explains it, "When you measure muscle electrical activity after weight training, there's less electrical activity, indicating that the muscles are more relaxed."

If you are not the type to meditate, try rhythmic, repetitive activities such as swimming, rowing or running, which increase alpha brain waves. These are the same waves that produce a meditative calm.

How many of us have said we can't find time for one 30 or 40 minute exercise session? The American Council on Exercise suggests taking a 10-minute break every 90 minutes to climb stairs or walk around the building. You'll accumulate 50 minutes of exercise in an eight-hour day and be more productive, because you're reducing stress.

For stress-relieving benefits, try exercising at least 30 minutes most days of the week. If you are new to exercise, begin with just two or three days, then work up to five or more days. If you need help or have questions, ask your martial arts instructor. Remember, exercise doesn’t just affect your physical appearance, but your mental health too.

Instinct:

Trust your instinct; don’t push your feelings aside. Many times your instinct can heighten your awareness level and assist you in avoiding confrontation. Don’t be a target !

Avoidance:

No one wants to attack someone who will fight back. Show high levels of self-esteem and self-confidence, make eye contact with everyone and hold your head high.  Don’t be a target !

Distance:

Know your personal circle of safety and keep distance from any attack. Distance is essential, but not always avoidable. Don’t be a target !
